This Year's Model Updates:

The high-performance X5 4.6is is discontinued. The 3.0i and 4.4i receive an exterior update, as well as a new all-wheel-drive system called xDrive. A six-speed manual transmission is now standard on the 3.0i, and a six-speed automatic is standard on the 4.4i. The 4.4i also receives a new 4.4-liter engine with Valvetronic and a fully variable intake system. Both models can add Sirius Satellite Radio and Bluetooth hands-free cell phone capability as dealer-installed accessories.

Pros:
  • Rides and drives like a BMW sedan, multiple drivetrain choices, top safety scores, high-end cabin furnishings.
Cons:
  • Less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, poor fuel economy in the city.

Purchased new. Always followed recommended maintenance schedule. 54,000 miles driven as of jul/2010. Front brakes replaced under warranty (28,638). Starting to have lots of maintenance issues. Heat exchanger (34,113 miles). Thermostat (37,803). Front axle boot (47,488). Brakes fluid needed flushing (52,779). Rear brake light assembly (53,353). Front thrust rod bushings replaced (53,793). Told we need to replace other front axle boot. Passenger side a/c not working. What is next? All BMW repairs are not cheap. We purchased a 2005 Ford escape SUV (now with 57,000 miles) and have experienced only brake replacement. We didnt expect a $50k BMW to have these issues. We intended 2004 x5 to be 100,000 car.

I have had the truck two months now and am fairly disapointed to the point I am looking for another car already. First the acceleration with x drive is amazing for a V6, and the handling couldnt be better. However for a $50K car there are more rattles then you should have in a car costing half as much. It has been at the dealer twice in two months for a loose bracket on the exhaust and for a loose sleeve on the steering system. There are loud rattles from the rear gate and the dash that make the car seem very poorly built. The ride on a bumpy road is very uncomforatable.

  • Watch out for Trans Problems - 2004 BMW X5

Nothing but mehanical problems since I bought it. Having a new transmission at 6k miles and more electrial problems seems like its cursed like the 7 series.

  • deep pockets - 2004 BMW X5

Anyone thinkig about buying a used x5 out of warrantee needs to have deep pockets. The dealer has seen me so much that I think they are getting ready to give me an award for most visits for service. Two window motors, front headlight, rear light, door mordigs, window sunscreen clips, ashtrays that pop out of the rear door when closing, window washer tank cover broke off. All this right after manufacturers warrantee ran out. You need to buy a Toyota as a second car so youll have something to drive while the BMW is in the shop.
