Overview & Reviews
New 528i and 540i sport wagons debut, all 5 Series models achieve low emission vehicle (LEV) status, and consumers will find extensive new standard and optional equipment on the cars.
- Sport sedan and wagon in a luxury car package.
- Cheap plastic buttons for the power door lock switches are out of place in a car of this caliber, manual transmission in 540i difficult to modulate smoothly.

Coolest Looking Wagon - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By andre - January 17 - 2:00 amBuilt like a tank but handles like a sports car. I have the six cylinder version. Sometimes I long for the 8 but overall performance is strong, particularly at high cruising speeds.

Just what the dorctor ordered.... - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By Joynkev - December 3 - 2:00 amHaving trst driven everything in this class that Mercedes, Audi, Lexus and Jaguar had to offer, I returned to the 540 with open arms. The 6-speed stick- shift just clinched it for me every time. (The M5 had not yet been released, and at $75K+...er...I dont think so).

Cant Touch This! - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By Chris977 - November 8 - 2:00 amThe 5-series definitely sets the standards by which all other sedans should be measured. Each and every day the car continues to amaze me! The steering and handling is like no other car Ive owned. The car simply handles and looks flawlessly. It was engineered extremely well, if not even over-engineered!

Pure Pleasure - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By ClaireKrais - November 2 - 2:00 amThis cars overall performance and luxury is excellent. A solid car that drives out perfectly as if it were still brand new. This is my second BMW. The only thing better than my 528iA...could only be the new 745Li!

The Ultimate Drivers Car - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By KernelPanic - September 7 - 2:00 amThis is my 3rd BMW and 1st 5 series. I simply love this car. It is well-appointed, seats five comfortably and drives like a demon. The 4.4l engine is built like a Swiss watch, and can easily run up to red-line with no hint of roughness. The low-end torque is outstanding as well. With the 6 speed and sport differential the car hits 65 MPH in second gear in around 5 seconds. The sound system is excellent as well.

Upgrade to newer year - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By bwilljr - August 2 - 2:00 amI just moved up from my 97 to a 99 528IA. So sweet. I was looking at new Nissan Altimas, used Volvo S-80s, and Infinity G35s. Bottom line - they are not the ultimate drivig machine. Buy a ceritifed used vehicle, beat on the dealer, do your homework on price (TMV with Edmunds and look at Car & Drivers websote as well as Kelly Blue Book on line), sell your used car, and take advantage of BMW financing (Im in at 3.9 60 months, 100%). You will not be sorry.

Simply the BEST - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By Boca - July 23 - 2:00 amThis is my third 5 series beamer and nothing comes close to the proformance, style and comfort of my 540I. Equiped with every option including the 6 speed manual transmission that will put you back in the sit in each gear. The low end torque allows me to limit the down shifts and still leave me a lot of power.
