  • Beautiful Wagon - 1999 Audi A6

Without a doubt, the Audi A6 Avant is a stunning car to look at. Although I didnt have many problems with it, it is now out of warranty and Im getting rid of it before it attacks me in the wallet. Too expensive to fix and I fear a transmission problem developing ("clunking" at 70+ mph. Have had to replace the tires twice in 3 years and I keep losing trim pieces: cupholders fall apart and the cover on the headlight washers have fallen of, while driving, 4 times and Ive had to replace them. It is a lovely vehicle, but dont keep it past its warranty!

Bought the car used with 52k, looks great, love the interior, but poor reliability. Within the last 10 months I have had a transmission leak ($320), engine oil leaks ($1,000), cruise control module ($525), transmission relay ($520) and the digital display is fading. I plan on trading it in next week on a Nissan.

  • German Disappointment - 1999 Audi A6

Bought the car used -- still under Audi A$$urance -- and boy did we need it! Dealer tried to weasel out of almost all our issues. Our personal mechanic was more reliable than the dealer. We bought Audi because we trust German engineering (we own a 13 year old Benz that has over 225K miles - still solid as a rock!). Sorry to say .. this will be our last 2.8 A6 -- and its interesting to see Audi now using a 3.0 in place of the 2.8 -- hmmmmmmmm.

  • A6 Lovely but risky - 1999 Audi A6

I love my A6 Avant in most repects. I can throw my two dogs in the back and go camping or enjoy the twisty canyon roads with the steptronic transmission. I love the interior, the sound system, the looks and the refined engine /transmission combination. All I ask is that the car hold together over the long term. I bought it with 36,000 miles and 2,000 miles later it is in the shop having a clunk in the front suspension looked at. The brakes are also being scrutinized as they have begun to squeal. The air conditioning works well but sounds like a giant vacuum cleaner. I recommend the Audiworld website.

  • The worst car ever created - 1999 Audi A6

For the $40k this car cost, it should be reliable. Its not. 16 major problems and 22 minor ones in 4 years. I wish Id bought two $20k Mazdas instead. Ill never buy another Audi. EVER.

  • Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop - 1999 Audi A6

Relatively pain-free an absolute joy to drive. Originally a SoCal car, now in Michigan, the quattro has impressed. Fuel sending unit recall early on, expecting more trouble never had it. Only other odd thing: Rear pads lasting about half as long as fronts and the rotors not being "turn-able" despite catching pads early. My Jetta VR6 is MUCH more problematic Doubt Ill buy A6 after lease is up 7/03 just for fear of what Ill be up for. Oh, yeah. Leatherette interior, no seat heaters, no BOSE, no moonroof makes this cars residual a joke (but original deal bettered V70).

Several items had to be replaced during the five years of ownership and other observerances. 1. Relay switch for transmission had to be replaced. (Repair cost was refunded by Audi after I wrote them a letter.) 2. Headlight washer pump had to be replaced. Covered under warranty. 3. Middle rear seat belt froze and had to be replaced. Took three weeks to get part. Covered under warranty. 4. Fastener for front carpet broke off. 5. Service provider suggested repairs that were not needed after warranty expired. This was confirmed by a master mechanic.

  • A6 Sedan Too Many Repairs - 1999 Audi A6

Very poor build quality for a $35,000 car. Does not compare in quality to my Acura 3.2 TL-S and lacks standard features found on comparable cars. Audi repairs: replace gas gauge, replace digital dash, replace door hinge, rebuild drivers seat, replace rear seat back latches, front grill inserts fell out. Overall bad value for the money. Audi is not a quality builder of cars.
