Model Overview:

Drivers seeking a sporty sedan that's a bit more upscale than the typical family four-door will find a lot to like in the Acura TSX. It's a solid choice for daily use given its competent driving characteristics, high-quality interior and generous level of standard features. And like most Acura products, the TSX boasts a high level of refinement, a reputation for above-average reliability and decent value for the dollar.

The first-generation Acura TSX impressed us with its sporty and nimble feel, but the small backseat and firm ride weren't for everyone. The second (current) generation offers a roomier cabin and a smoother, more isolated ride, although the athletic feel was somewhat muted for these gains. The V6 model with its sportier suspension atones for that sin somewhat. Overall, the TSX is a smart choice, though not the most prestigious, for a new or used entry-level luxury sedan.

Current Acura TSX
For power, the front-wheel-drive TSX offers a choice of a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (201 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque) or a 3.5-liter V6 (280 hp and 254 lb-ft). A five-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models, while an excellent six-speed manual is optional only with the four-cylinder.

Base and Special Edition trims are offered, with the Special Edition being available only with the four-cylinder engine. Base models come with an impressive array of standard features that are often optional on competitors, like xenon headlights, a sunroof, heated power front seats with driver memory, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control and a seven-speaker CD audio system with satellite radio and iPod integration. The TSX Special Edition adds more aggressive-looking exterior elements and sporty cabin upgrades such as red interior stitching and aluminum pedals. Base models with the four-cylinder engine may be upgraded with a Technology package that adds amenities like a navigation system and a rearview camera.

In reviews, we've found that while the 2.4-liter four is commendably smooth in the Honda tradition, it simply doesn't measure up to the six-cylinder and turbocharged four-cylinder engines found in other entry-level luxury sport sedans. The V6, however, provides a notable increase in thrust, delivered in a linear and smooth fashion.

In reviews, the TSX impressed us with its technology offerings, including one of the better optional audio systems around. But it disappoints with the way it drives, with numb steering feel that's uncharacteristic of a Honda product and braking performance that verges on unacceptable. The refined but lackluster inline-4 is also unlikely to impress shoppers in the TSX's upscale segment, although the sport-tuned V6 model brings improvements in both acceleration and handling. Ultimately, the TSX, particularly the four-cylinder version, often seems like more of a lavishly appointed family car than a luxury sedan.

Used Acura TSX Models
The current generation of the Acura TSX debuted for 2009 and brought a larger, roomier and somewhat controversially styled TSX to market. This first-year version was only offered with four-cylinder power -- there was no sportier V6 trim level.

The first-generation Acura TSX debuted in 2004. Sportier than the second-generation model, the original TSX was widely praised for its sharp handling and entertaining (though peaky) 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that generated 200 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. Among the standard features were items like 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, a sunroof, heated power front seats with driver memory, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control and an eight-speaker audio system.

Antilock brakes, stability control, front side impact airbags and side curtain airbags for all outboard passengers were also standard. An impressive DVD-based navigation system with touchscreen and voice-activated software was the only available option for the well-equipped first-generation TSX.

In road tests, we found that while the original TSX's torque-deficient VTEC engine needed to be revved hard to get sufficient acceleration, it was nonetheless quite fun to wring out, especially when equipped with the slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission (a five-speed automatic was also available). Sharp handling and good steering feel made the TSX a sleeper sport sedan. The first-generation TSX also featured a high-quality and aesthetically pleasing interior design.

There were a handful of changes made to the original Acura TSX during its production run. Satellite radio, heated exterior mirrors and a power passenger seat were added in 2005. The 2006 TSX featured engine, feature and styling updates -- the four-cylinder engine was modified to produce 205 hp and 164 lb-ft of torque, and the navigation system gained faster processing and additional points of interest. Bluetooth, driver seat memory and the MP3 auxiliary jack were also new. Exterior enhancements included redesigned front and rear fascias, new side sills, foglamps and new alloy wheels. The following year saw a tire-pressure monitor fitted as standard, while 2008, the last year of this generation, saw no changes of note.

I have put 84,000 mi. on it and it is tight and rattle free. Still love the 6 spd manual. Everything functions as it should. I rent more expensive cars and miss the quality of the TSX. Premium gas is only real downside.

  • Great high mileage ride - 2004 Acura TSX

Purchased my red/taupe tsx in March of 05. I have 132,000 miles on it now with minor complaints. Might as well start with the ugly since thats why we all read these reviews. As others have stated my once brilliant red paint is now cloudy and hazy on skyward facing surfaces. Cant tell from afar but up close people make comments. Most of my mileage is highway and my front bumper is more gray than red with rock chips. The paint durability is a joke. Ive had to replace two headlights to the tune of $900 each time, and my navigation has stopped working altogether. Dont get me wrong i still love this car, its handling, gas mileage, and options at this price are unmatched.

  • A Tough Package to Beat - 2010 Acura TSX

FYI, looked @ the A4, 328, & IS250. So, my ratings are relative to this group. The car is far better looking in person (Im okay with the grill-the TL is a mess). To me, the IS is the 1 car that has better exterior styling (the Infiniti G=ew!=no dice). For 0-60, heres the skinny: TSX i4 w/M 7.5s (8.3 w/A), 09 A4 2.0T (i4) w/A 7.3s, 08 328i (v6) w/A 6.9s, & IS250 (v6) w/A 7.7s. I couldnt quickly find the M numbers for the others, but probably slightly better. B/for the 3, the delta is minor. I only notice the i4 at >60 b/c the i4s narrower torque band loses to a v6s wider band. Overall, the TSX combines luxury, Honda reliability, & fun & everyday driving in an unbeatable combo.

  • Best value for your money - 2010 Acura TSX

I love this car! I had a TSX since Sept.07 and as soon as I saw the 2010 model on the road I fell in love with the new design. Acura really did an amazing job with redesigning this model both inside and outside! My previous TSX had the tech package as well but there is a big difference between the new and older model tech package, the new one is awesome. Very easy to use and the location of the display screen is much better. The 2010 TSX is also bigger inside and feels a lot more solid when you drive it. The car handles great, its so much more quiet than my previous one was and its a lot of fun to drive. I average 28-29 mpg (city&hwy mix). I can only say great things about my 2010 TSX!

  • Best car I have ever owned - 2008 Acura TSX
    By -

Bought this for my wife in late 2007, this car has been a great car, exactly what we were hoping for. The reviews kept pointing toward this car and I am very happy we purchased. The lease ends in a couple months and we are torn between keeping this car and leasing the 2010 RDX. It cant be beat for the price, if you consider quality, features and Luxury Brand. Not the quickest car on the road, but still a lot of fun to drive and feels quicker than numbers indicate. We have the black with parchment and wood interior, a great combo. The MPG are decent if you drive normal, last tank was 26 MPG with 60/40 HWY/CITY. I would highly recommend this car and the Honda products.

  • Worth every dime! - 2009 Acura TSX

Smoothest ride I have ever driven. I drove a rental car for a week and when i got back in my TSX I quickly felt the difference. Audio system is amazing, IPOD interface lacks a bit but works all in all. I have driven over 23,000 miles in my TSX and have enjoyed it every mile. Fuel mileage is good for this class car. I reviewed and test drove many others in this class and others offered far less for equal or more money. Reliability after 20,000+ miles - Vehicle shows no noticeable wear. Brakes ok, Interior ok, Exterior solid.

  • One Year recap - 2009 Acura TSX
    By -

Im reporting after one year of ownership. Excellent car all around. Since Im stuck in LAs traffic 90% of the time, the 4 cyl is more than enough for all situations. My main initial complaint was with the too stiff suspension. It has softened a little bit, but still a jittery ride on any surface. Too much for my comfort but I got used to it. Its quiet now that I changed the cheapo and noisy Michelins that came with the car. I put some Bridgestone Serenity (55X17) and what a difference they make. The only problem so far was a blown small speaker that had to be replaced.

  • Im now an Acura Man - 2010 Acura TSX

My driving experience has been extraordinary. I take it back and forth from downtown Chicago for a 90 mile commute 4 days per week. This car does it all. Plenty of thigh, lumbar, and neck support that makes my commute tolerable. I am extremely pleased with the fit and quality of the assembly. The anti-engine noise waves emitted by the speakers are amazing - the ride is whisper quiet depending on road condition. I have owned the car for 60 days of constant commuting and am averaging 27.5 mpg city/hwy combined. I am extremely pleased with this car and I am glad I didnt pay several thousand more for a comparable Lexus or BMW. Acura truly has an entry level winner here.

  • Long Crank to start! - 2007 Acura TSX
    By -

OMG - I could get a nap while it starts. When I bought I did not really realize that it was taking too long. sometimes when it rains overnight or if it is cold all day or I dont start for over 8 hours, then it takes 6-8 cranks, isnt that too long. I almost get scared what if it wont get started at all, Im late to my office. Is that only me? anybody else has this problem. My steering wheel vibrates when brakes applied, but they fixed it when I took it back.

  • Im in love with my Acura TSX - 2008 Acura TSX
    By -

This is my first Acura, and it was love at first sight. I built my Acura online, and the metallic cool light blue is the most beautiful color of all. This car is classy. Its pure BS about the engine being underpowered - I accelerate faster than anyone around me 100% of the time. Of course, you have to know how to hit the accelerator, and Ive lived long enough to do that. There are a few minor things that are less than perfect. The location of controls on the steering wheel could be better. The door does not always stay open in the half-open position. My biggest disappointment is the changes to the design in the 2009/10 models. Theyve managed to destroy a beautiful thing.
