This Year's Model Updates:

The TL Type-S makes its debut this year, sporting a 260-horsepower engine, sport-tuned suspension, Vehicle Stability Assist and 17-inch tires. 2002 also sees some styling revisions to the TL's front end and taillights. An in-dash six-CD changer, one-touch-up driver's window and two-position memory system for driver seat and mirrors are newly standard on both the 3.2 TL and the Type-S, and Acura has added insulation materials to the doors and reshaped the side mirrors to cut down on wind and road noise inside the cabin. Anthracite Metallic, Aegean Blue Pearl and Eternal Blue Pearl are the new exterior colors.

Pros:
  • Excellent value, comfortable front seats, impressive power from Type-S engine, SportShift transmission is fun to use.
Cons:
  • Average interior materials, cramped rear seat room, lacks the panache of some competing luxury sedans.

  • Needed 2 of these cars!!! - 2002 Acura TL

We bought my wifes 3.2 Type S in 2001 so we have had it a while. After over 30k miles it hasnt had to be repaired for anything. The main thing I hate is it is hard not to get a ticket in this car because it goes to fast and makes you try to take turns faster.

  • Great Car - 2002 Acura TL

Car has mostly been a pleasure. Only problem is that transmission has been recalled and I am on tranny #4. Acura is great though and warranties it for life. Performance for this car when it came out was amazing and it still competes with todays best. Besides the transmission issues there have been no problems. The nav system is the best in the business. Gets me from A-B in style and fast!

  • Fun car to own and drive - 2002 Acura TL

Our car is primarly driven by my wife. She loves it - in fact this is the first car weve owned that she truly loves. She always found fault with any of the other cars weve owned in 45 years of marriage. I rarely drive it except for long trips. It is a remarkable vehicle to drive on the highway.

This is by far the best buy for your money. Its powerful, smooth, reliable, very elegant. What more could you ask for. It offers a luxurious feel, and at the same time it feels like youre driving a sports car. I would definitely pick this car over any BMW, Infinity or Audi in a heartbeat. Its the most powerful car in its class and about 10 thousand dollars cheaper. It doesnt take a genius to fugure out that this car is a steal.

  • 113k and going - 2002 Acura TL

Still running strong after 4 years of ownership and 113k. No problems with the car whatsoever. Just the normal maintainance, tires, brakes, etc. I cant complain about this car. I have had 2 Hondas before this one, and I still see no reason to trade. I havent had any transmission problems. Aegian Blue is still appealing each time I see the car. Good MPG around 30 MPG highway, 22-25 city.

  • Love This Car - No Problems - 2002 Acura TL

Having owned this car for exactly one year I want to go on record as saying I have not had any problems. All Ive had to do is change the oil every 4000 miles. I have 22000 miles so far and have not experienced any transmission problems. This care is a lot of fun to drive - and I feel it is fast, responsive, and handles quite well. It is also a very comfortable car to drive.

  • Still Runnin Fine - 2002 Acura TL

I last posted on 9/22/04 and its 3 years later. Car styles have changed, but the fundamentals havent. I do not drive a ton of miles annually, but I do take some long trips, as well as plenty of day-to-day ones. My original review still stands. I did finally put some new tires on the car which, of course, are better than the originals, but other than that, the car has been good to me - without incident or flaws. Recently, Acura extended the warranty on the transmissions to 9+ years, I believe. It gets consistently good mileage - you dont have to use premium all the time, either it drives well - excellent on cornering brakes are good and sound/navigation are great!

The more I drive this the more I appreciate it. A very undervalued, underestimated car. Got it second hand and there is nothing I dont like, except fuel consumption in urban cycle. Powerful engine (feels like theres a turbo) that will have everyone in rear mirror in flash. Car is firm enough but also smooth when driving (you dont spend half of the time between seats and roof in bumpy areas). Ive driven Opel, VW, Peugeot, Honda, Citroen, Seat, Volvo, Nissan, Pontiac, Ford. None are a match to my TL. It is full of details without excessive electronics (fewer dealership visits). Tranny fine (for now). Nothing to envy to a Mercedes or BMW or Audi from the same segment. Its that simple.
