Overview & Reviews
The Acura RSX is a two-door sport hatchback. Replacing the Integra coupe, the RSX served as Acura's entry-level car from 2002 until 2006, when the brand decided to move itself more upscale and the car no longer fit into the company's scheme. Nevertheless, as a used car, both versions of the RSX should appeal to consumers desiring a reasonably affordable car that offers sporty coupe-like styling and accessible performance. Like most Acura vehicles, the RSX boasts a high level of refinement as well as a reputation for above-average reliability, competitive pricing and strong resale value.
In road tests, our editors found the RSX's main performance strengths to be nimble handling and responsive steering. The Type-S was particularly rewarding to drive. Throughout its production run, the Acura RSX was one of our favorite sport hatchbacks, but toward the end, several new and redesigned competitors of both versions usurped our favor.
Most Recent Acura RSX
Nearly every feature on the Acura RSX was standard, which makes finding a preferably equipped vehicle easy. Throughout its lifespan, there were two trim levels available: base and Type-S. The base model should work well for consumers interested in having a fun-to-drive car that's comfortable for daily commuting. The RSX Type-S has mechanical upgrades that increase the car's performance potential.
The base RSX came standard with the majority of convenience features expected for this class of car. Highlights included automatic climate control, power windows and mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, a CD player and a moonroof. A smooth-revving four-cylinder was standard, and it came mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. The base RSX initially produced 160 horsepower, but new SAE horsepower ratings in 2006 changed the number to 155. Leather seating was the only option.
The RSX Type-S added an in-dash six-CD changer, standard leather seating, 17-inch wheels, a more firmly tuned suspension and more powerful brakes. The Type-S also had a four-cylinder engine tuned to produce extra horsepower (200 hp, later increased to 201). A six-speed manual was the only choice for a transmission.
Because of its four-cylinder engine and front-wheel-drive layout, the Acura RSX boasts better fuel economy than many other sport hatchbacks and coupes. Front-seat occupants will be comfortable, but adults sitting in back will find headroom lacking. The rear seat is split 60/40 and can be lowered to increase cargo capacity. So configured, the RSX boasts nearly 18 cubic feet of luggage space.
Consumers interested in a used or pre-owned RSX should not have a problem finding one that matches their desires. Only minor changes were made after the car's debut. The most significant of these occurred on the 2005 RSX model, when Acura revised the suspension and steering for better feel and response, updated the exterior styling and slightly increased the Type-S's horsepower output to 201.
Past Acura RSX Models
The RSX replaced the Acura Integra. Shoppers interested in a used Acura sport hatchback previous to '02 will want to research this model.

05 purchase - 2005 Acura RSX
By diver - January 6 - 2:52 pmIve been extremely happy with my 05 rsx type-s. The car is very refined, has more than adequate performance for a regularly aspirated 2 litre 4 cyl, reasonably comfortable for a performance sports coupe and has great fuel economy to boot. I waited for the 05s to come out as I wasnt thrilled that the 04s still had 16" wheels and a little too much road noise. The changes for 05, although relatively minor, were enough for me to forgo the 04.

Best Car in its Class - 2004 Acura RSX
By BHMnPalmBeach - January 3 - 12:19 amThis car is great! I traded in a 350hp Trans Am for this car because I was quite upset with having the brand new TA in the shop for over $5000 worth of work in the year I owned it. I have always hated these little foreign cars. However, after opening my eyes to the actual value, performance, gas mileage, reliability, and outstanding customer service (including a real live, brand new Acura TSX loner car when your car needs even minor service). If you even remotely like to drive compare this $24,000 car to the $24,000 04 Grand Prix (my mom just bought one). All I have to say in closing is a little quote from my favorite periodical, Car and Driver, "Best Car in its Class!!"

This is IT! - 2005 Acura RSX
By AU DC5 - December 31 - 7:42 pmI am absolutely THRILLED with my new RSX. I got the sporty type S. The 6 speed is incredibly smooth and easy to drive. This is my first manual transmission and Ive had no trouble. The engine is extremely powerful producing over 100 hp per liter (a very impressive engineering feat). Leather recaro seats are awesome. 6 disk bose cd system is very nice. Power at 5500 rpms all the way up to the 8000 rpm redline is astounding for an engine this small. Will outrun pre 99 mustang GTs and runs nearly neck and neck with the pre 05 mustangs. Not bad considering they have an engine HALF the size of the ponycars! This car is a dream for the budget minded driving enthusiast!

Great Little Car! - 2005 Acura RSX
By Racehorse - December 30 - 2:36 pmPerhaps the best small car I have owned! Built tight, like a little watch. Performance, handling, steering, visibility, power, quality, Honda put it all together on this one. A blast to drive. Goes exactly where you point it. Accelerates good just running up to 6000 rpm, but then youve got 2000 more on top of that!

Love the RSX - 2002 Acura RSX
By Damon - December 29 - 5:43 amLove this car, its sporty, yet more luxurious than most other similar sport coupes out there. Handles great, looks great, the interior is very sporty/modern looking, the seats are very comfortable. Great deal for the price.

Better than most of its competitors. - 2005 Acura RSX
By Jose - December 29 - 2:02 amThis car will definitely blow most competitors doors off, especially in the price-to-equipment ratio. A similarly equipped Toyota Celica GT-S will cost you $4000 more and still be outrun by the Type-S. New for 05, this car now pumps out 210hp, without any turbo. Torque is broad across all RPM ranges the Celicas narrow powerband was disconcerting, especially during passing. Performance, good fuel mileage (24/31), and reliability are this cars strong points. Keep in mind, though, this car requires premium fuel, but thats a small price to pay for such a performer.

Love the car but Acura is good at hiding - 2005 Acura RSX
By huntersdl - December 27 - 2:12 pmThe 2005 has Tranny issues just like the last ones... They didnt redesign the 5th and 6th syncro to be smoother... the truth is they had and still have poorly designed syncros.. my 2002 had a 2nd gear grind... they replaced it with 2005 carbon syncros... it eliminated the grind in 2nd now 3rd and 4th have a grind.... 3rd will not go into gear sometimes... and you think it is but then it pops out and grind! I have talked to Hendrick mechanics and all the 2005s have the same problem with 3.... they all tell you to wait and push the clutch in all the way.. but that shouldnt be the way it is... its a great car otherwise . no other problems... Acura needs to step up to the plate!
