Model Overview:

The Acura MDX is a midsize luxury SUV with a carlike unibody platform and three rows of seats. The original MDX bowed in 2001, at a time when most competitors still featured body-on-frame construction and the term "crossover" was but a glimmer in some marketer's eye. Since then, Acura has maintained the MDX's family-friendly packaging, including standard seven-passenger seating, while spicing up the recipe with various styling, performance and handling enhancements. In typical Acura fashion, every MDX comes well equipped, with options generally limited to a few choice features bundled into packages.

New or used, the Acura MDX stands out for its comfort, versatility and refinement. It's one of our top recommendations for a family-oriented luxury crossover SUV. In reviews, we've found the MDX to be a polished performer, as it remains one of the more engaging luxury crossovers to drive and also provides a commendably supple ride. Weak points include cramped third-row accommodations for adults and less sumptuous interior appointments than in some rivals, though the MDX's strong resale value offers ample compensation.

  • Awesome Acura - 2003 Acura MDX

My Acura MDX has been great from day one. The handling of the vehicle has been better than my Grand Cherokee. My only complaint is that the gas mileage could be a little better in the city. Highway is great.

  • Balanced Luxury Utility Vehicle - 2005 Acura MDX

My wife and I looked at several luxury and non-luxury 7-passenger SUVs. The list included the Toyota Highlander, Cadillac SRX, Volvo XC90, Honda Pilot, Mercedes ML, and more. The SRX was the most fun to drive, but the XC90 had more safety features. The ML had the best "luxury" interior, but the Highlander and Pilot were all priced considerably less. Well, the MDX has more HP than the SRX, is second in crash tests to only the XC90, has better reliability than the Benz, and is more prestigious than a Toyota and Honda combined. Winning combination in our book!

Pretty nice overall, aside from the front air vent falling off in my hand and the rear speaker covers can be easily pried off without tools. The whole interior is bland and it drives like the Queen Mary II.

  • Fun to drive, joy to own - 2009 Acura MDX

I tried to convince myself to buy a German SUV. I test drove the X5 (3.0), Audi Q7, and the ML 350. In my opinion none of the German cars come close to touching the MDX in handling, comfort and space. Material could be a touch better in the MDX (the black fiberglass trim looks cheap for example). But there is no way I could justify 8-10K more for any of the German cars. And dont get me started on the RX350 or the CX9.

  • 02 MDX - 2002 Acura MDX

The MDX has been great although the 02 is well known for transmission failure. Mine gave out at 60K. There are hundreds and hundreds of similar stories, even at much lower mileage levels. You will here a "burr"ing sound between 40 - 50 MPH while traveling in 5th gear. Talk to your dealer and to Acura customer service in order to get a new transmission heavily discounted or best case, for free, even when you are out of warranty.

  • Nice, but has some flaws - 2009 Acura MDX
    By -

I love driving my MDX. The base model has everything you really need, it includes a lot of upgrades that you pay for in other cars. The negatives: Low quality leather, it wears bad. The black plastic trim would be better replaced with wood trim, for a $40,000 vehicle that shouldnt even be a question. I notice a lot of road noise in the cabin. Also, I have the worst time getting my hands free link to recognize certain numbers. Sometimes I will have to say the number 4 like 5 times before it will actually dial the correct number. That is VERY frustrating. Also, for a $40,000 vehicle, it should have an automatic liftgate. This car does have excellent road handling, overall I am happy!

  • Not Buying an Acura - 2002 Acura MDX
    By -

For sure, this vehicle is fantastic in terms of price, but the quality and the detail of this vehicle is second to the bottom when compare to anothers SUVs like (Highlander, RX300, ML3s and X5). Fake wood trims, unacceptable wind and road noise, unprofessional Acura salesmanship (went to 3 of them, they are all like that, basically Leave it or Take it attitude), lack of feature and feel of a luxury vehicle. Though it is my parents car, but I will definite will not consider an Acura.

  • I thought Acura/Hondas were relable? - 2005 Acura MDX
    By -

I really liked the features of the vehicle. Drove it one week and started hearing a "rumbling" noise around 30-40 mph. Seemed like the transmission was having problems shifting. Dealer had it for two weeks, had to rebuild the transmission and replace the torque converter. Luckily I will have 3 years/36,000 mile warranty on the transmission. Besides that, nothing else to complain about so far. I thought Acura/Hondas were supposed to be very reliable?

  • Never Better - 2004 Acura MDX

The MDX has very good gas mileage for the type of SUV.Its very practical and nice. Its as comfortable as any other car. I love it. The car could use a better bumper for door dings, though.

  • MDX: SUV You Can Really Count On - 2003 Acura MDX
    By -

The MDX provides great handling with style. The seating is very comfortable and adjustable. Driving the vehicle is effortless as it provides excellent stability on and off the pavement with good acceleration. Because it drives like a sedan, I was surprised to discover that it is a highly capable off-road vehicle. For me, the MDX provides a perfect balance of luxury features, comfort and the performance youd expect from an SUV. When I let my friends drive the MDX, it can be difficult to get keys back. Even if you dont like the idea of driving an SUV, you will find that driving the MDX is the coolest. Price-wise, it is an amazing value.
