Model Overview:

The Acura MDX is a midsize luxury SUV with a carlike unibody platform and three rows of seats. The original MDX bowed in 2001, at a time when most competitors still featured body-on-frame construction and the term "crossover" was but a glimmer in some marketer's eye. Since then, Acura has maintained the MDX's family-friendly packaging, including standard seven-passenger seating, while spicing up the recipe with various styling, performance and handling enhancements. In typical Acura fashion, every MDX comes well equipped, with options generally limited to a few choice features bundled into packages.

New or used, the Acura MDX stands out for its comfort, versatility and refinement. It's one of our top recommendations for a family-oriented luxury crossover SUV. In reviews, we've found the MDX to be a polished performer, as it remains one of the more engaging luxury crossovers to drive and also provides a commendably supple ride. Weak points include cramped third-row accommodations for adults and less sumptuous interior appointments than in some rivals, though the MDX's strong resale value offers ample compensation.

I was one of the first to own the MDX and never had any regrets. I once got a flat in a bad area and Acura Roadside Assistance came to the scene and changed my tire in less than half an hour! Never had any trouble with the car, it lives up to Acuras reputation of reliability. Performance is amazing both on and off road. I truly believe some of the other consumer ratings were posted by RX/X5/&ML owners. They paid thousands more for so much less, I dont blame them for their animosity.

  • Second MDX is disappointing - 2016 Acura MDX

I traded my 2013 Acura MDM in for a 2016 and am very disappointed in the new cars transmission. It is very clunky and shifts in and out of gears unnecessarily. Based on the transmission alone, I would not recommend this vehicle. The old transmission was a 6 speed and was much smoother than the current 9 speed. At highway speeds it is fine, but in ordinary city stop/go traffic it is not. I do like the lane change warnings and the warnings that you get when you are backing up that another car is approaching from the sides. This is very helpful when pulling out of a parking space when another truck or SUV is next to you. The car informs you someone is coming before you can actually see the oncoming car. Very nice feature! I wish Acura would offer a HUD, I have one on a BMW and it is another feature that once you have, you dont ever want to give up. The navigation system display is not very well done and the software it uses is not very efficient, also much better on my BMW. All-in-all, I would rather have my old MDX back.

  • Fun & Built to Last - 2003 Acura MDX

Having purchased 2 Acuras in the previous years, I decided to go back to a car I could depend on. The new 03 rides well and is quick when you need to accelerate. Styling features are clean and theres plenty of room for large drivers, as well as, a large family if needed. Gas mileage for me runs 19mpg for both city/hwy, and compared to the X5, which I was leaning towards, not only did I save thousands, yet the car outperforms the X5 in all categories except braking.

After 25,000 miles, I still like the MDX more each day. Its comfortable, powerful, versatile (because of the 3d row seats). The handling is wonderful, and the controls are convenient to use. Its excellent in the snow. The leather is holding up well. Its a perfect car for my family--we have 2 preteen kids. There are plenty of cupholders and lots of room for their friends. A great car.

Great car, but the windshield sometimes "sings" at high speeds.

  • Not Luxury Quality - 2005 Acura MDX

Purchased new two months ago, we have put 5000 miles on the MDX. At about 1500 miles the LCD display locked up (froze) causing loss of the ability to use the nav or to control the heating and air conditioning (a real bummer when youre lost in a strange city). After turning the car off for approx. 1/2 hr. it appeared that the electronics cooled off enough to start working again. The thermostat on the heater/air conditioner has never worked properly and the interior fogs up easily on humid days. Several other things, like loose retaining screws on some of the external body parts, etc. indicate a general lack of concern for quality.
