  • The Lowest Polluting Car on the Plant - 2002 Toyota Prius

I purchased a Toyota Prius not just because it gets good gas mileage but also because it is one of the lowest polluting production cars available. My MPG varies from 39.6 to 50.1 depending on the traffic conditions and my driving practices. The 50.1 was obtained while driving a steady 60-65 mph for a distance of 1000 miles. Given its size I also find it a surprisingly comfortable car to drive over long distances. I am less tired after driving for 8-10 hours than I have been in a standard size sedan. Also, it has all the creatures comforts you could want. This is especially true of the newer Prius. One change I did make that improved the ride was to put on a set of 80,000 mile tires.

You must drive this car! Crusing around with the engine totally off is a real trip. Sitting at stoplights in total silence is amazing. The ride is very quiet at all times, even on the freeway. Definitely spring for the touch-screen navigation system - worth every penny. Very comfy ride, great view out. Auto climate control is excellent, and the stereo has surprisingly good sound.

  • Prius beats my expectations - 2002 Toyota Prius

My Prius has ben a delight from the start. Its quality, fit and finish and feels are the usual Toyota rock solid. And the pay off at the pump is terrific. I just came back after a 600 mile trip and found it to be better than expected on the trek. The steering could use some more on center feel, and an armrest would be a plus, but other than that, I love it!

  • I like my Prius - 2002 Toyota Prius

I believe this car has defined a new category of cars I like to call "Luxury Economy". It really shines around town in stop and go traffic but also does surprisingly well on long road trips. Center gauge placement keeps your eyes closer to the road and you can forget having to duck your head around to see that one gauge that is always obscured by the steering wheel. Very smooth and comfortable ride. Dont let its exterior size fool you. It has lots of headroom even for someone 6 ft tall.

    Great car. Reliable, innovative.

  • Beware old Hybrid Battery - 2002 Toyota Prius
    By -

I bought this car used at a dealership and they checked everything else EXCEPT for the hybrid battery. Being a hybrid, and having 2 batteries could be a nightmare waiting to happen. I used it for 2 days and the 2nd day, on the way home from work on the freeway my car had stopped accelerating. The main battery light came up and I had to stop on the side of the road to start it up again. This happened 3 times, and I only live 10 mins away from my work. The cost to replace an old hybrid battery is 3000 for parts and 2000 for labor. BEWARE. Only the new Prius are reliable considering this is the earliest of models.

Ive been very happy with my 02 Prius. Good resale value! Its now 7 years old and running superbly. My MPG has been an average of 38 in the winter and 42 in the summer. This car really has to be serviced at the dealer. I went to Jiffy Lube for a radiator flush, and though they insisted they used the right fluid, they didnt and my car broke down. I had to replace the coolant reservoir ($600). My only other repair still needs to be done: the navigation system stopped working due to an electrical failure. All the other features of the display work (audio, trip computer, avg MPG, etc) The nav can be repaired for $600 refurbished or $4000 new but I think I will just buy a tomtom.

I love my Prius. I will never buy another automobile. I have been in the mountains of West Virginia and North Carolina, and the plains of Illinois and have never had a problem. I just do the oil changes and tires and enjoy the ride. I average 48-55 mpg and have gotten up to 62 mpg in the city. What a feeling!!! Toyota!!!
