This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

The Highlander drives like a car, gets fairly good gas milage. I love the easy loading and unloading of grocery, etc. I thought I wanted a SUV for my next new car. I checked out the Jeep, Chevrolet, Honda, Ford SUVs. Loved the style, ease of driving the Highlander. I added running boards, as I am short. I just love it, it is fun to drive and couldnt be more pleased.

Shopped around and tested everything from Nissan to Honda to American makes and settled on the Highlander.Took almost 8 weeks,5 cities & countless phone conversations but it was all worth it. It rides so smooth youll think youre in a mid size/luxuary car. Blazer felt like a truck and the X- Terra really felt like you were off the road all the time. Drove both 4 cyl. and 6 cyl engines and settled on 6 just for pure pickup getting into traffic Sharp car, from color to performance.Wide seats, even in the back, according to my passengers. So far gas has been fine(18-19 around town...20 on the trips).. Wont get another new car review from me for 12- 14 years...

We worked with a dealer located 90 miles from our house. After 8 days of emailing back and forth, we agreed upon a price that was $500 below Edmunds TMV. This dealer understood the importance of customer service and honesty. Side curtain airbags, 6CD changer, Leather, Heated seats 3.3L V6...wow. We were looking at the Pilot and the Highlander in the home stretch. The reach distance for the driver to the radio/climate controls was more comfortable in the Highlander. The front seats are more comfortable than the Pilots.

  • A good SUV with a few flaws - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Had it for 6 months. Previous cars include Accord, Nissan Quest. Good power, comfortable and solid. Handles nicely. Quiet when windows are closed. Performs well in snow/ice. I truly enjoy driving it. Music system is excellent, NAV is very confusing and appears less capable than the Honda Pilots. Susceptible to easy scratching inside and out. Wind noise is bad, but the low frequency reverberations when the back windows are open or sometimes when the moonroof is open by itself produce intolerable discomfort. A tolerable ride with moonroof or windows open without too much noise requires continuous adjustment of the windows depending on the speed.

Purchased my 4WD Highlander one month ago; not suprisingly it continues to impress me. Car-like ride, quiet cabin, and secure, controlled handling. Interior layout is a study in ergomonics. Excellent visibility, supportive seats, and controls that are intuitively positioned. The 3.3 V6 is strong but quiet motor that mates well with the powertrain components.

I am a Toyota fan and at my age never thought I would own an SUV. However, now that I am living in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains, my needs have changed. This SUV has it all.....in one week, I used the roof carrier to transport a surfboard (before moving from Florida), the third row seat to transport 6 passengers and the seats were down to transport boxes to my new home in SC.
