This Year's Model Updates:

Not much has changed this year for Toyota's truck-based 4Runner SUV. The SR5's optional Sport package has gained a front skid plate, floor mats and new tube step-up bars (optional). Handsome 15-inch alloy wheels are now standard, there's a new chrome package available, and Golden Pearl has been added to the Limited's selection of exterior colors.

Pros:
  • Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power-down hatch glass, standard stability and traction control, brake assist system.
Cons:
  • Hard to climb into and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

  • Great vehicle! - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

I love this vehicle! Ive had it for over 3 years and 80k miles and not one single repair (knock on wood). The only work done on it has been changing the fluids and a new set of tires last month. It represents Toyotas quality at its best. The only complaint is that the interior is somewhat small compared to other SUVs.

  • Noisy Relays/ABS Actuator Pump - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

This truck has a major flaw. You will hear the 3-clicking noise when you first start it in the morning even if you do not step on the brake. Drive the truck for 10 minutes and make a complete stop, and after a few seconds you will hear the clicking noise again for 3 seconds as if something is engaging and disengaging. The local dealer and the District Office of Toyota Motors informed us that the noise we hear is the ABS Actuator Pump and it is normal so Toyota would NOT replace it. This persistent noise can be really annoying so buyer beware...

  • Best car I have ever owned - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

I enjoy driving it every day. The best vehicle I ever owned. Toyota builds it right. SUV shouldnt ride like a car. This vehicle can go off road or not. People that gripe about the ride should buy a car, it is setup to do it all

  • Dream Truck - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

I use the truck for daily driving. It is rock solid. I also drive 270 miles to family several times a year and the trip is comfy. I travel in fields while towing and travel down poorly maintained dirt roads. So I cover a lot of different terrains and the truck functions. Interstate travel is quiet, the transmission shifts smoothly. Off road and dirt roads the truck performs well.

  • Excellent Truck - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

I love this truck. Have had it for 2+ years, bought at 50K miles and now have 80 and not a problem. Handles all weather, lots of room, actually is quick from 0-25 mph due to torque, very comfortable, good visibility, great reliability.

  • Reliability in unbelievable - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I have had my 4 runner for quite sometime now and have paid it off now. Out of all cars I have owned, including a BMW M3, reliability is outstanding on this vehicle. It has never, ever broken down on me. I put synthetic oil in it, and it purrs. I love my 4 Runner. A good choice for women who know nothing about vehicles, it never breaks down.

  • A Tough SUV - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I purchased my 02 4Runner 4WD Limited when it was about 2 years old. I purchased from an acquaintance who I knew took virtually perfect care of all of his vehicles. I purchased this 4Runner as I am one of the very few folks who truly needs 4WD and uses it regularly. I had had previous positive experiences with Toyota 4WD vehicles, and liked the aspects of balance, ground clearance, true box frame, two speed transfer case... in short, I wanted a small truck. So far, so good. My 4Runner still looks and runs virtually like new. Oil changes with Mobil 1 every 5K, plus meticulous maintenance will hopefully allow this vehicle to last for many years.

  • Lovin it! - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

Ive loved the 4Runner since it was a truck with a fiber glass top back in 84 and Im positively loving it now. I love the ride height and it handles well with such a high center of Gravity. The ride feels like Im gliding (my last SUV was a Jeep Cherokee so belive when I say this doesnt feel like a truck!) Interior is quality. Needs a touch better gas mileage and a more powerful engine.

  • The only "true" SUV - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

This is my 2nd 4Runner and I still believe it is the best true SUV on the road. The reviews that say the ride is very "truck-like" are not rating my Runner. I have driven a number of SUVs on the road and can confirm that this is one of the best. I have never had a single problem with either of my Runners and will remain a loyal Toyota customer based on my satisfaction.
