This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Love It!!!!!! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I love my little Liberty! I have had it for 2 and 1/2 years and it has only been in the shop for routine oil changes and the recall for ball joint. No problems with heating, cooling or anything. I totally enjoy this vehicle. It could have a little more trunk space but then it wouldnt be the sporty little SUV that it is. I do have to say that I really dislike Daimler Chrysler for the customer no-service. The ball joint recall letter never arrived and the telephone folks are abysmal. Probably would think long and hard before I buy another one of their products. But I do love my Liberty and hopefully will continue too.

  • great city ride - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Very pleased and at 63" 250lbs, plenty of room for 4 golfers and clubs Coming up on 4 years and 95,000 miles, went cross country and every day driving exceptional. Fuel economy could be much better but utility, reliability and fun cant be beat. Lived in NYC 2 years with it and so easy to park and maneuver. One set of brakes and change oil religiously. Made a mistake on second set of tires, should have stayed with originals. I would recommend, no worries Just lost A/C compressor other than that has been very reliable. Finally, will purchase and turn over to daughter. had Grand Cherokee and Durango previously.

  • Jeep Liberty a real lemon - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My Liberty is 4 years old. We have had nothing but problems. No A/C since July, a condenser problem. Rear differential seal leak, transfer case leak, window regulator went bad, tail light filled up with water and shorted out the electrical system, 2 ball joint recall notices. And the gas mileage? On a good day, 18mpg. NEVER AGAIN. Im going for Kia or Hyundai next vehicle. My 12 year old Honda Civic with 125,000 is a more reliable vehicle.

  • Jeep Liberty -- 4 DR 4x4 Sport Edition - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Ive owned my Liberty for two years already. I find that it is a reliable and fun car. I mainly use it for school, with weekend excursions up the mountain to ski or hike. Its a great car, overall. ALthough, refueling can be a pain since it burns gas like no others (then again, arent all SUVs).

  • Will NEVER Own A Jeep Again - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

We bought our Jeep when it was 3 years old. At the time we bought it, the air conditioner was broken & the engine light was on, making it hard to get inspected in PA. Everything started going on it, the head busted twice, kept stalling at low RPM, window switches broke, door locks broke, gear shift stuck all the time, and the problems go on and on. Finally the engine blew, and I wasnt paying to get it fixed so its sitting in my driveway if anyone wants it! Ill never own another Jeep as long as I live. We bought a 2008 Ford Explorer and just recently a Dodge Nitro praying we dont have problems with the Dodge like we did the Jeep.

  • Youll never get me out of a Liberty - 2002 Jeep Liberty

This is not a vehicle for folks who want the immenities of a Lincoln Town Car but have more room. The Liberty is a Jeep through and through and doesnt pretend to be anything else. The Liberty gives you anything you could ask for in the "utility" department (handling, room, features, dependabilty). I have had no complaints regarding anything dealing with the functionality of the Liberty. Plus, it is one of the most dependable vehicles I have ever owned. Avg 17 mpg, but that is the exact rating, cant complain. Summary: dependable, functional, fun, comfortable, inexpensive.

  • It hit a solid double - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

My second new Jeep, Ive been a little peeved about the little quirks. The air/heat fan is too noisy and there are rattles in the dash. I love the performance of the vehicle, and the gas mileage hasnt been horrible. Its very comfortable for me and three friends to ride around. If it werent for the noises, I would say this is by far the best value for the money. Now, Im not so sure.

  • Check your airbags! - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

We bought a new Jeep 2002 Liberty Renegade and fell in love with it. For two months we were in SUV bliss. Then when we accidentally hit a curb the airbag went off and caused us to crash into a concrete column. The Jeep was totalled. This has been a really rough time for us. We have owned 3 Cherokees and this was our first and last Liberty. The airbag system needs a design overhaul - or - our Liberty was a lemon, I am not going to buy another one to find out. I guess this is what you get when you buy a 1.0 version of a new year run. The car only had 2000 miles on it.

  • cute suv - 2002 Jeep Liberty

This cute suv turns peoples heads, it needs to be a bit bigger inside and it needs to get BETTER gas mileage, other than that we just love it.

My Liberty was purchased with 77000 miles on it and I am about 200 miles short of 100000 and its still running as well as it was the day I bought it. It has plenty of power and as a college student, I have plenty of cargo room to take stuff back and forth. It goes great in the snow/ice and in the mud! I love my liberty so much!
