  I have owned several M3s, and liked them all. This is my first M5. Getting older I was looking for a more power and great handling but when not in the mood a little more comfort with the convenience of auto transmission in traffic. It tries to accomplishes all this but this is where it is flawed as it cant be a master of everything. At slow speeds the SMG is dimwitted. It doesnt react as quick as a manual and you can be beaten of the lights unless your on your game. Gear changes can be brutal when in attack mode. However I love it - the challenge you face is to know the car, set it up the way you want it and adapt to its shortcomings.Gives it a unique character.

  I find the car a real kick in the pants to drive. It is refined when called for but hit the m button and hold on . What a monster. But this car is the most precise and accurate steering car I have ever driven. It corners like it is on rails. Roll into a tight turn and Punch it and it just hunkers down, rolls out on azimuth, and jumps out like somebody kicked it from behind. Lots of cool cars on the street with wicked exhausts. But you can take em in this car. If you have turn nothing but a pure supercar can keep up. The transmission takes a little getting used to but bottom line. I love it! Acceleration is smooth, fast and predictable.

  Picked up a low mileage 07 M5 after reading some tough reviews on fuel economy and terrible SMG transmission. Dont beleive them! This car is a drivers fantasy car...the motor and transmission are incredible and smooth, you just need to invest some time and figure it out. I am getting 19mpg sriving 80mph with "power on"...itll go from 50 to 100 fater than I can write it, the paddles/F1 shifiting is perfect. I have a 911 and a CayenneTurbo...love them both - this is better. If you love to drive, find one of these M5s and own it. Also helps if your brother is a state trooper, you will get in trouble, promise.

  Too heavy, not a precise and agile M car as its forebears were. Most of the performance is completely unusable in daily driving. Prepare to be beat at every stoplight unless you are really on it. I think J. Clarkson said it best: completely annoying until you hit the M button. Too bad you cant use that button for 95% of your driving meaning you will have a really annoying car for 95% of the time you are driving. Sold mine a bought Porsche: a massive improvement in just about every way.

  This is a 4 door race car. Performance and handling are as good as the Porsche I used to own. The difference is that this is an everyday driver. I dont understand the complaints about the iDrive. With a little effort, I find it very intuitive. The SMG is the same - with some experience, it becomes second nature.

  The cars performance is better than those exotics like Ferrari and Lambo and Porsches. What I mean by performance is not just acceleration handling and braking, it includes family hauling, grocery shopping and everyday driving. Try hauling a baby seat with a Ferrari or Lambo. Try grocery shopping with a Porsche. In that means plus great handling, face numbing acceleration and you have the M5. It is my 2nd M5 and I love it. Although not as much as my previous M5 for fun-to-drive, or my neighbors Honda CR-V for grocery shopping, but I love it, I love it, I love it

  Owned this car for almost a year now. It is my fifth BMW and first M car. Other BMWs had no reliability problems and fairly good performance. This car is all performance and no reliability. First 2000 miles in the break-in period, it consumed a quart of engine oil every 100 miles. It seemed like it ran on engine oil and not gasoline. I had problems with transmission (SMG), tire allignment, and drivers window. But I dont know if any other car can match this cars performance, practicality and fun to drive. It is stealthy enough to not attract too much attention, and yet it is powerful enough to street race a Porsche non turbo. Love this car, will buy again when the new model comes out.

  This is a great performance sedan, huge power and handling and braking capabilities when wanted, and easy docile cruiser otherwise. Wonderful exhaust note. Eye catching style/color, rare, and fine. 6 speed manual is state of the art, smooth, accurate, and fun. Gas mileage can be either OK or terrible, your results will depend on how often you dip into the high rpm full throttle antics. 20 hwy is doable with some restraint. Some minor nit picks but overall a great car, and great value even at the lofty price. A bit heavy, but solid.

  Buyer beware: There’s a reason for all those mediocre reviews out there in the automotive press. In truth, many of the reviews sound as though the writers think even less of the car than what they actually write, but are reluctant to bash a car with the reputation of the M5. Well that reputation was built from the first three US models. This one is fundamentally different. This is a Mercedes posing as a BMW. Its all about speed and comfort and lacks the handling of the earlier cars. Its very heavy and you feel every pound. It about cruising not about flogging down a twisty road in the countryside. You feel disconnected from the road, there is no sense of immediacy on turn in.

  Probably the only car you can store your golf clubs (it comes with an illustration for 4 bags), bag cart or baby stroller at the same time. Great amenities such as window shades, adaptive headlights, etc. Five people fit nicely although the rear folks will be crowded. Nice exhaust note, lines. Gas mileage and transmission is another story.
