This Year's Model Updates:

The big news for 2004 is the addition of a 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder engine to the lineup late in the model year. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is a delayed option on 1.8T-equipped GLS models. Also note that the 2.8-liter V6 is no longer available on GLS models. The premium Monsoon stereo and Homelink are now standard on all GLS models, while wood trim has been added to the optional Leather Package. The ESP stability control system is now standard on the GLX. Rounding out the changes are restyled 15- and 16-inch wheels and new side mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Expensive upper-level models, less rear-seat room than some competitors, some confusing interior controls.

This car is great except for one problem that VW cannot fix - the 4motion clunk. Heres what happensÂ… Say Im driving at a speed over 25 mph, and then slow down to around 10-15mph. If I press the accelerator (no stopping), the car jerks really hard into gear. It feels like Ive been hit from behind. VW is aware of the problem and expects a fix within a couple of months. I am not the only person with this issue. http://www.clubb5.com/forums/viewtopic.p hp?t=70416&highlight=4motion http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread? id=1274244

I FEEL YOU GET MORE THAN EXPECTED FROM THIS MID-SIZE GERMAN SEDAN. I BELIEVE THIS VEHICLE DRIVE MUCH BETTER THAN THE BMW 3 SERIES, THE VOLVO S60, AND JUST AS GOOD AS THE AUDI A6. WHICH, FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT KNOW ITS BUILD ON THE SAME PLATFORM AS THE PASSAT. IN MY OPINION, WHY BUY THE AUDI A6 FOR ABOUT $6500.00 MORE WHEN YOU CAN GET THE SAME CAR WITH THE SAME FEATURES FOR LESS.

Test drove the 2004 Passat TDI Wagon and thought Wow, nice car! GLS Full- boat. Thought that the wagon drove better than the sedan!? Interior was Plain-Jane...Fake-wood trim looked just that, FAKE. Putrid interior, tan leather was already scuffed and dirty! But a nice driving car...If they can ever get more options...why no GLX version?!!!! I hate the blue-lit dash, cannot see the contrast of the numerals vs the background blue...wiper speed stink, give me a variable speed dial!

The Volkswagen Passat is an understated beauty that drives very smoothly. Strangers stop me on the street to talk about it.

My experience with Passat starts in 1999 with wagon 1,9L TDI with 110Hp, M 5 gear, after that i had the sedan too, with same motor. A few mounths ago, i change them for a new wagon passat 1,9L TDI but 6 M gear and 130HP and the sedan is now the Audi A4 with same motor. I like very much Passat, the price in Portugal is fair, about 35000 USD with taxes, for a confortable, reliable, economic and prestige brand car. Ive never drive an automatic passat, i supposed its not so emotional. Comparing with A4, in Portugal we pay more 5000 USD, wich i think it dont worth, despite A4 being one of the most beatifull car in the world.

Wanted an A4 Avant but too expensive and Quattro slaughters gas mileage - I recently bought an 04 1.8T wagon 5 speed - all I can say is FUN. Came from a 05 Grand Cherokee at 14 mpg, the Passat has more room, is SO much fun to drive, and returns 23/30 mpg.

I love my car, if it would just keep working!! I have owned 3 VWs. But my 3rd is making me look like a fool. I love the way it drives, it corners like it is on rails. Very comfortable interior, awesome sound system. Other people dont understand why I still have it. I have now been stranded 2 times and have only owned it for 15 months, with 76,ooo miles. This car is well cared for. The coils have failed, CV boots replaced, and now oil cooler failed. I hate to get rid of it, but at this point I could owe a Lexus for what it has cost me to fix this one.

selected this model for price, style and fuel economy 4cylinder. after 2weeks you get a letter notifying you of the 4cyl engines problems with oil clogging. whats good is you are covered by and 8yr unlimited mileage transferrable warranty for this problem. whats bad is the need to use synthetic oil at scheduled oil changes (double the price) and the need to maintain documentation of all services should this problem arise. this was a disappointment for me becuase i think a 4cylinder engine should provide the lowest maintenance costs. i am averaging 24 mpg over 5000 miles. the car so far has been enjoyable, but i am coming off an acura tl

My wife and I looked at a Saab 95 and Volv0 V70, but the GLX Wagon had the best combination of features (Onstar and Memory Seats that drive the price of the 95 to $40,000) and price. The only thing missing was a little exclusivity and Xenon headlights. Gas economy seems very poor, but I expect it to improve as we put more miles on the car.
