This Year's Model Updates:

The big news for 2004 is the addition of a 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder engine to the lineup late in the model year. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is a delayed option on 1.8T-equipped GLS models. Also note that the 2.8-liter V6 is no longer available on GLS models. The premium Monsoon stereo and Homelink are now standard on all GLS models, while wood trim has been added to the optional Leather Package. The ESP stability control system is now standard on the GLX. Rounding out the changes are restyled 15- and 16-inch wheels and new side mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Expensive upper-level models, less rear-seat room than some competitors, some confusing interior controls.

I FEEL YOU GET MORE THAN EXPECTED FROM THIS MID-SIZE GERMAN SEDAN. I BELIEVE THIS VEHICLE DRIVE MUCH BETTER THAN THE BMW 3 SERIES, THE VOLVO S60, AND JUST AS GOOD AS THE AUDI A6. WHICH, FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT KNOW ITS BUILD ON THE SAME PLATFORM AS THE PASSAT. IN MY OPINION, WHY BUY THE AUDI A6 FOR ABOUT $6500.00 MORE WHEN YOU CAN GET THE SAME CAR WITH THE SAME FEATURES FOR LESS.

I picked this baby up on trade in of my 2002 Jetta GLS TDI. I would have gotten the TDI but they were out of the 04s. After getting over the mileage difference (about 10mpg or so) I am very happy with the change. There is a lot more room and with the leather interior and all the included options for only about $50 more a month it cant be beat. My insurance went down about $20 too! You owe it to yourself to test drive one of these!

So far this car has been excellent. All I have to do is put gas in it and change the oil every 5,000 miles. It rides well, has good power, and is very comfortable while being sporty enough for spirited driving. Ive been very happy with the Passat and plan to have it for years to come. I recommend it to anyone looking for any sedan. Its at about the same price as the Japanese cars but much more fun to drive and its a low cost substitute for the equally fun to drive as the higher-priced German sedans.

The TDI (diesel) was hard to find, but worth the effort. Great gas mileage...up to 44mpg w/o air conditioning running. The acceleration and handling are simply great!! Watch the horn...have to punch it in just the right spot (a small spot) - not a plus when you need it in an emergency. Interior finish is perfect. The diesel runs very roughly in the 20-30 mph speed after startup. It smooths out after it warms up...hope this can be adjusted on first trip back for service. Generous trunk space, full-size spare tire, and plenty of leg room in the back seat. So far, love the car!!

  • But Can You Get One? - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Test drove the 2004 Passat TDI Wagon and thought Wow, nice car! GLS Full- boat. Thought that the wagon drove better than the sedan!? Interior was Plain-Jane...Fake-wood trim looked just that, FAKE. Putrid interior, tan leather was already scuffed and dirty! But a nice driving car...If they can ever get more options...why no GLX version?!!!! I hate the blue-lit dash, cannot see the contrast of the numerals vs the background blue...wiper speed stink, give me a variable speed dial!

The Volkswagen Passat is an understated beauty that drives very smoothly. Strangers stop me on the street to talk about it.

I fell in love with the car during the test drive. I was very impressed by the quick response of the Turbo compared to the others cars that I had test driven. It has stable solid feeling while drving so I feel safe. But the best thing of all is that my car insurance rate dropped because of the ALL the safety features it has!

Owning a Passat has been one major headache. The car spent over 40 days in the shop during the first year of ownership. I hope to sell the car before the warranty expires. I will never buy another VW.

  • A Portuguese view of VW Passat - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

My experience with Passat starts in 1999 with wagon 1,9L TDI with 110Hp, M 5 gear, after that i had the sedan too, with same motor. A few mounths ago, i change them for a new wagon passat 1,9L TDI but 6 M gear and 130HP and the sedan is now the Audi A4 with same motor. I like very much Passat, the price in Portugal is fair, about 35000 USD with taxes, for a confortable, reliable, economic and prestige brand car. Ive never drive an automatic passat, i supposed its not so emotional. Comparing with A4, in Portugal we pay more 5000 USD, wich i think it dont worth, despite A4 being one of the most beatifull car in the world.
