This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, all Jetta models get an updated look, optional telematics and a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI engine (GL and GLS models only). The 2.0-liter engine is now PZEV-rated, and the GLX trim is no longer available. Also note that you can no longer get the 1.8T engine in GL trim. Besides that, the GLI sedan sports new 17-inch alloy wheels and the Cold Weather Package items (heated seats and washer nozzles) as standard, while the GLS features a standard Monsoon stereo. The wagons get a revised instrument cluster late in the model year, and the sedans get new metallic trim rings around the gauges.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom, weak base four-cylinder.

This is my second Turbo Diesel, 5spd Manual. Theres not enough room here to list my gripes about this poorly built car. Ive learned to hold parts of the dash while driving. From the first 14 miles, I notice SMOKE. Then, the cruise failed, with such a rough idle, you cant run the AC while idling at traffic lights. Oh no, whats that, an engine light? Come on VW... quit torturing your customers. Signed, a future X-VW owner.

  • Do Not Buy This Car!!!! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my car two months ago and it has been a disaster. In the first month a vibration started in the steering column and the foot pedals, seats and doorsills. Took it in and the dealer said live with it. Then the transmision was having trouble; again they said live with it..vibration still there...then they said the turbo charger had a problem..but they didnt fix it ..just deleted the code from the cpu. I am not gonna live with it...no one should. Finally it was admitted to me that there were three problems..but that was on their final repair attempt. what a coincidence!

  • This Car SUCKS - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had this car for only 9 months and I am already getting rid of it. Jettas may look cool, but reliability sucks. Since having it I have put nearly $7,000 in repairs. It will run great for a couple of months and then I will have a major problems (i.e. clutch, MAF sensor, ignition coils, MAF again, O2 sensors (yes plural), alternator, and master cylinder to name a few. Displeased doesnt even begin to describe how I feel about this car. I am trading it and sticking with a Toyota or Honda.

  • Fun Car. BUT, in shop every 3 months! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

The car is fun to drive. But, there are so many problems with the emission system the car has to be taken to the dealer about every 3 months to be fixed. Sometimes the car is out of comission for several days while parts are being ordered. This car is not reliable.
