Overview & Reviews
For 2004, all Jetta models get an updated look, optional telematics and a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI engine (GL and GLS models only). The 2.0-liter engine is now PZEV-rated, and the GLX trim is no longer available. Also note that you can no longer get the 1.8T engine in GL trim. Besides that, the GLI sedan sports new 17-inch alloy wheels and the Cold Weather Package items (heated seats and washer nozzles) as standard, while the GLS features a standard Monsoon stereo. The wagons get a revised instrument cluster late in the model year, and the sedans get new metallic trim rings around the gauges.
- Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, solid build quality.
- More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom, weak base four-cylinder.

04 Jetta is a piece of junk - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By POS - June 20 - 9:03 pmThis car is a money pit and Volkswagen (both the dealership where the car was purchased or the headquarters) does not stand behind their cars. Ours has a cracked manifold which the mechanic said is due the car being a lemon. He said there is not reason for this to happen on a car with only 60K miles and that has had all maintenance performed since day one. This car has been treated very kindly since day one but still one costly problem after the next and all Volkswagen can say is "sorry". Dont buy this car! Buy a Honda or Toyota instead and save yourself the headaches!

Not worth the money. - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By Johnson1 - April 20 - 10:00 amPros : Overall driving performance ok. Accerlation, cornering, cruising speed, stopping all ok. Cons : Overall reliability below par. Wind noise loud, glove compartment arm broke, front passenger power window broke, drivers side window leaking (rain) when closed completely, beverage holder broke. There are better cars out there for the same or less price. I would never buy a Volkswagen again

Lemon - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By unhappy Jetta owner - March 18 - 6:10 pmI bought a new 2004 Volkswagen Jetta. Within the year I brought it back three times expressing my concern regarding the transmission. They told me thats the way it drives. Brought it back a few more times they told me nothing is wrong. Brought is t back again and they wouldnt even document it and said thats just the way the German cars drive. 11 months after the warranty is up they were able to find a the problem with the transmission but it now will coast me 1,500 or more to fix. Anyone experiencing this type of problem should contact the National Highway and traffic department if enough people are having a problem maybe they will do something about it.

DO NOT BUY - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By jason Meigs - May 14 - 10:00 amDO not buy this car, they have had several recalled parts and they take NO responsibility if the car breaks even with a bumper to bumper waranty i had the car for 9 months and the transmission broke they made me pay 3000.00 for it then the eslectrical system went out and they covered it but it took 5 weeks to get it finished and do not even try to get a rental car from these people..PLEASE do not make the same mistake i did. once you drive off the dealership VW has no concern for you. I rate this car as horrible. there are several websites dedicated to VW lemons., they are hurting MANY people do not let them betray you...

Do Not Buy - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By Brian A. - December 31 - 10:00 amThis is the worst car I have owned. There are continous problems with starting the car. The service department cannot determine the cause. They will do anything not to give you a loaner vehicle.

Should have completed more research! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By Sneel - June 15 - 1:43 pmVery disappointed in this purchase. Thought that it would be more reliable. Someone warned us that a Jetta was like a Christmas tree--- always a light on and we should have listened! From Day 1, we had problems. The brakes and roters never were quite right, the armrest broke, center piece of wheel came off never to be found again, transmission problems, trunk problems, remote on the keychain only worked when it wanted to, .....you name it! Definitely went with American made for our next purchase!

GARBAGE! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By xtr3medriver - May 15 - 11:30 amI bought my July of 2006. It ran wonderful in the summer but as soon as winter came around it started dying on me. I started to notice every time the temp outside went under 30 degrees, my car wouldnt run. We took it to the mechanics and had the alternator, battery, plugs & wires all replaced. It still would die. Then we took it in and had the whole wire harness replaced, it seemed to work for a few days then started dying again. Weve taken it to the dealership and they cant even figure out what the problem is.

DISAPPOINTED IN VW - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By # 1 Queen - April 14 - 2:26 amWhere to begin... tail lights flicker on/off and then go completely out on numerous occasion. Plastic fins in water pump rot away, causing car to overheat while driving. Clicking noise coming from dash by hazard lights button. Extremely stiff suspension. Door ajar light on/doors trunk closed, interior light switch doesnt work properly. Trunk/gas release fell into door, sunroof switch doesnt work correctly. Piece of junk- had a 94 Golf and 98 Passat, loved them- hate this!
