This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, all Jetta models get an updated look, optional telematics and a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI engine (GL and GLS models only). The 2.0-liter engine is now PZEV-rated, and the GLX trim is no longer available. Also note that you can no longer get the 1.8T engine in GL trim. Besides that, the GLI sedan sports new 17-inch alloy wheels and the Cold Weather Package items (heated seats and washer nozzles) as standard, while the GLS features a standard Monsoon stereo. The wagons get a revised instrument cluster late in the model year, and the sedans get new metallic trim rings around the gauges.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom, weak base four-cylinder.

this car is awesome to drive. there were only so many made. it gets extremely good fuel milage, even when it is driven like it is on the autobahn (he,he,he).everyone wants to know what it is, we get lots of compliments and questions about its performance.they say it looks as if it is going 100 miles an hour just sitting still.

  • I still love my Jetta :) - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

This is a follow-up from the initial review I wrote on July 12, 2004 when my Jetta was almost brand new. I have not had any problems with my Jetta thus far. (Ive driven about 26,000 miles.) The gas mileage is fantastic for long road trips on the interstate where you can drive a steady 65-75 mph. I most often drive my car short distances with a stop sign every block and the gas mileage is very low.

  • Almost 50 miles per Gallon WOW - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Sporty and comfortable, this handy little car is not compromising on room. It handles like a Porsche, yet has the luxory of a caddy. The blue interior lights are pleasant to the eye, so easy to see in the dark. I took my TDI all the way from Santa Maria, CA to Medford, Oregon on ONE TANK OF FUEL, averaging 48 to 50 miles per gallon. You never have to smog the TDI, and the exaust is cleaner than a gasoline engine. AND SO QUIET for a deisel engine! It handles like a dream. There is no Glow Plug to wait on when you warm it up. TDI has come a long way

  • Excellent car for what it is - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive owned this car for a solid 10 years & have had minimal issues. After 10 years, every car will start falling apart & showing its issues. That being said my major issues that I have had are below. The car runs great if you take care of it & maintain it. Im not sure what everyone else does with their vehicle, but I love my Jetta & will buy another as a project car once I manage to run this into the ground. 110k miles & going strong.

My wife and I have been looking at the Jetta Wagon for some time. I really wanted the TDI, however, California is run by eco-crazed politicians who do not permit the sale of any TDI version of VW. In any event, we settled (lucky for us) for the 1.8T. This is the same engine in the Audi A4 but tuned down for marketing purposes. We also opted for the Sport and Winter packages which make for a great ride even on cold mornings. The leather seats are very nice and firm (which happens to be my preference). I will switch to synthetic oil after the first interval to help the warmer running turbo engine last longer. We love this car to death.

The new Jetta is a great car. I am very pleased. I really enjoy the smooth ride and it is seems exceptionally roomy considering how little it actually is compared to other cars of its class. It is well designed inside and out. Its great design doesnt stop under the hood. It is very user friendly and clearly distinguishes what the average owner needs to check and what the average owner needs to leave alone.

  • Jetta wagon 1.8T GLS 5M - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I love my Jetta. Its a blast to drive, it gets good mileage, and its cargo area is pretty big. So far (knock on wood) in about 7300 miles, I havent had any problems with the car at all. I would highly recommend this wagon to anyone who needs a wagon, but still likes to drive.
