This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, all Jetta models get an updated look, optional telematics and a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI engine (GL and GLS models only). The 2.0-liter engine is now PZEV-rated, and the GLX trim is no longer available. Also note that you can no longer get the 1.8T engine in GL trim. Besides that, the GLI sedan sports new 17-inch alloy wheels and the Cold Weather Package items (heated seats and washer nozzles) as standard, while the GLS features a standard Monsoon stereo. The wagons get a revised instrument cluster late in the model year, and the sedans get new metallic trim rings around the gauges.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom, weak base four-cylinder.

  • Wagons are still cool - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I am 6 foot 5 and just bought my first Volkswagon ever and it was the TDI wagon. Everything about the car in swonderful, the only problem was I waited a little too long to buy it (after the gas price increase) so I had to pay a little more than I wanted, but knew in the long run it will pay off in fuel prices alone. Excellent transport vehicle for carrying gear in the back. Put some Yakima roof racks on it and tinted the windows, and it is ready to go. Awesome.

  • NOT YOUR AVERAGE JETTA - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Driving is fun again. I previously owned an mk2 Jetta GLI with its recaro style seats stiffer suspension, 16" wheels and red pinstripe. This car takes it to another level with its great (and tunable) 1.8t engine, 18" BBS wheels, and 6 speed trannie. The interior and exterior styling are an added plus (red brake calipers-whoa!!). With the sport tuned suspension, i feel like im on rails going around corners (GREAT!!!!). For $22000, this car offers a great platform for a person to add his or her own upgrades. In my opinion it beats out many cars in its category

  • no regrets - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I went from a volvo s70 to a vw jetta and have no regrets. i wanted a smaller vehicle for lots of driving with the same comfort of a volvo. i saved a lot of money downgrading to a smaller vehicle but didnt lose anything but space. i love it! i feel very safe for such a smaller vehicle.

  • Quick but noisy - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Quick, tho sometimes jerky, fun to drive, good in the snow. Excellent handling and brakes. Heated leather seats are great in Minn. But rattles in the dash and squeeks in the rear suspension are really annoying - and with a little better design and quality control could have been prevented at minimal expense. Might not buy again.

  • Definitely a VW Fan - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

After almost 3 years of owning this car, i can honestly say its had a few issues, including water pump replacement, standard transmission syncros replaced, clutch replaced as well due to leaking transmission after synchro repair (dunno if that counts due to dealership not wear and tear), exhaust hangers quit after 1 year and a few bulbs and small issues like rim caps etc. Nothing major except for what was listed and that was all warranty work. Drives great, never fails to fire up and go.. great little cars overall. Love the stereo, sunroof and other features it came with. 1.8 T motor is great. just enough push to play, not enough fuel sucking to make it a gas pig. Overall, very balanced.

The car is great for zipping around town. For my first car while learning how to drive i think i picked a great one. Performance wise it comes with many great parts so you dont need to change any.

  • TDI- unbelievable - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I have owned my 2003 Jetta TDI wagon for 7 months now and I have to say its the greatest thing I have ever purchased. I get 45-50 MPG average with a Lead Foot! FUEL prices are as low as $1.45 at local truck stops and with a 700 mile range in the tank its easy to shop around. The car is well built with very little interior noise and a great factory radio. Overall Looks great, uns good, nothing but smiles here.

  • Im in Love with my TDI - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ive had the car for a little over 2 weeks now and I absolutely love it. The drive is smooth, mileage is great and the turbo gives great performance. Most people think that you need to sit and wait for glow plugs for a couple minutes, that the TDI is loud, and that they stink. ALL NOT TRUE!The interior is great; very comforting. At night the dash glows with the red-blue combination. It looks great! Also, a great resource for TDI information (besides edmunds.com) is tdiclub.com. Check it out and the car. Youll love it!

I bought my Jetta GLS 2.0 automatic two weeks ago. It is a great ride, the leather package is a charm and it gets great gas mileage. I drove from Pensicola Florida to Atlanta Georgia on one tank of gas. Its a great buy.
