This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2002 model year, the GLS and GLX trim levels are dropped. Instead, choose from the juiced-up 180-horsepower turbocharged inline four (that can be mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic) or the VR6 engine. The current 174-horsepower, 12-valve VR6 will be replaced with a 24-valve unit good for producing 200 horsepower in the spring of 2002. Later on, a special-edition model called the GTI 337 will arrive with a six-speed manual hooked up to the 180-horse 1.8T, as well as 18-inch wheels, 225/45VR18 performance rubber, a ground effects kit, genuine Recaro seats and red accents inside and out. All-new Volkswagen vehicles come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, reasonable price, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility, available six-speed manual.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

  • Cant quit driving! - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

I love my car! Traded in a 98 Nissan Pathfinder for this car that fits my needs more. I got Tiptronic and luxury pkg, although I was planning on just buying basic + cold weather pkg- now Im hooked on the sunroof. This car handles great. The quick pickup is something else- its truly a pocket rocket! I test drove Acura RSX w/ manumatic trans, but that was boring. This car is so much fun to drive- it picks up my mood! Sure, the cup holders in a stupid place (over stereo) but I forgive it since I like other things so much. You can buy a cupholder tray that fits in your armrest from VW accessories web site, which I promptly did :-)

GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH THE DEALERSHIP! VERY HELPFUL! IF YOU ARE IN DFW AND IN THE MARKET FOR A VW THESE GUYS ARE IT! THE CAR IS GREAT TO DRIVE. TOUGHEST THING IS TO KEEP MY FOOT OUT OF THE FOOT WELL (LIKES TO GO). THE MOTOR IS EXCEPTIONALLY SMOOTH. REVS LIKE A SEWING MACHINE AND TONS OF TORQUE. NO WAITING FOR THE VTECH TO WORK. NOW POWER! THE 6SPEEDS ARE ICING ON THE CAKE! SPRINGS ARE ON THE TO DO LIST TO SHARPEN HANDLING. OTHER THAN THAT, HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES!

  • fun to drive - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

this is my 6th new VW and through the last three model runs mk2, jetta3 and now Golf GTI IV the improvement is outstanding not to mention the extra room and the refined interior and ergonomics, quality of trim and details like heated seats and traction control make this vehicle a class in its own. Only issues have been the ignition coil recall which I was able to crawl the car to the dealer and a loaner and immediate one day repair where provided, also pwer window mech failed but also was repaired on the spot maintenance has been 3 $50 services and so far 2 years into it that is all other than gas that Ihave invested in this vehicle

  • Great Car - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

I test drove many cars, including an RSX type S, a Celica GT-S, a Matrix, and Subaru WRX. Among all those, the GTI was the best bang for the buck. It has great performance and handles very nimbly with the 17" optional wheels. The fit and finish is above and beyond any of the vehicles I tested. Overall a very well crafted piece of machinery.

  • 337 Edition is for real - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
    By -

I actually had to go to Vegas to get my 337 edition but it was WELL worth it. The extra 30 hp is a huge difference. The six speed manual is perfect and this car turns heads. The 18 wheels and 40 series tires grip the road like crazy and this thing is a little rocket. I love everything about this car, the recaro seats really hold you in place when cornering hard and this car loves to be pushed to its limits. If you can get your hands on one I would suggest you do it.

  • Pretty good! - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

The car is a blast to drive. I, too, like others had to deal with the recalls which is never fun. And the Monsoon radio has randomly quit working 4 times with in the first year (dealer says if it happens again they will install a new one and bill VW). So dont get the Monsoon. If you want sound just save your $$ and get an aftermarket one. All that being said this car is an absolute blast to drive. Period. Itll seat 4 adults reasonably comfortably and when the rear seats go down its amazing how much stuff can be crammed in there. Practicality and performance in one package.

  • Best in its class - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
    By -

I have never seen a car in this class to have such stylish interior. It feel like you are in those expensive german cars. The performance is great and driving the car is so much fun and you will never get enough with this car. Once you experience its luxury its hard to go to other types of cars in its class.

  • Fun Car But..... - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
    By -

This is a very fun car to drive. The interior is well laid out and posh. With the 5-speed its zippy and nimble. There is plenty of room for friends or a trip to local home improvement store. VW needs to improve the electronics in this car. Numerous sensor failures, all of the bulbs in the car have been replaced at least once and the Monsoon head unit shorted out. When the car is in the shop, its not much fun.
