This Year's Model Updates:

For 2003, the Echo receives a new look with a redesigned front and rear fascia. The front bumper and fenders feature sharper and more prominent lines, a new chrome-slat grille and new headlamps with a distinctive bulb layout. Optional round foglamps accent the new front-end design. In the rear, a new trunk lid with chrome plate garnish, a new bumper and redesigned combination clear-lens taillights provide a more upscale look.

A new Appearance Package adds aerodynamic body enhancements, including overfenders that blend into the front and rear underbody. A rear trunk spoiler incorporates the LED high-mounted stop lamp.

The standard 14-inch wheels get a new wheel cover design, and, for the first time, the Echo can be had with optional 15-inch wheels. The new styling is topped off with five new colors.

Pros:
  • Good gas mileage, speedy acceleration, roomy and functional interior, Toyota reliability.
Cons:
  • Cartoonish styling, annoying gauge placement, tilt-a-whirl handling, deceptively low base pricing.

  • Good Car - Bad Dealer - 2003 Toyota Echo

This car is remarkably quick for its engine size and is fun to drive. I wish I could say the same of the dealer, who lied to us about the cost of installing a CD Player, which is still not working after 4 trips to the dealer. The only dangerous thing about this car is its spedometer that is only marked every 20 MPH. It is very easy to drive faster than you intend, since most people are used to having each large mark on the spedo be 10 MPH not 20 MPH as in this vehicle.

The Echo doesnt get much publicity-- watch any Toyota ad on tv and you will see plenty of Camry, Tundra, Corolla footage, but nothing is ever said about the Echo. Too bad, because this is one heck of a car. Gas mileage is incredible, as is the ride quality and interior design. Great stock sound system. Interior is just plain cool with all the storage spots for your gear. All this for a decent price and the Toyota family name.

This is my third Toyota. which I purchased as a Certified vehicle. Its quirky looks and smallish exterior are more than made up by the excellent interior room and outstanding fuel economy. My Echo is pretty basic, manual everything except transmission. To date, Ive been very please with the quality and economy. Id recommend the Echo to anyone looking for a fun, reliable commuter car.

  • Best Economy Car Ever - 2003 Toyota Echo

I purchased a 2003 Echo with a manual transmission for $13k just a few days ago (11-09-02)Its possibly the best car Ive ever driven for the price. The seats are high and comfortable (Im 61), theres plenty of head room. Cargo space seems endless (almost makes we want to buy stuff just to fill them!). The engine is a only peppy at high RPMs, so dont expect great acceleration which one shouldnt for a small car. I did notice the manual performs better getting on the hwy than the automatic. Knowing Toyota is very very reliable, I highly recommend this car for college kids or first time buyers, this was a great buy!

This little car has the room and comfort of my other Toyota...which is a Camry. It is awesome, super reliable and great gas mileage. If you a very comfortable and simple car to get you from point A to point B...this is it!

Best little economy car on Earth ! Shes 7 years old now, and not a single problem or repair, with the exception of the "rusty floorboard recall" of several years ago. Just routine maintenance. You could drive this car into a volcano, and it would still run. Fairly comfortable to drive on long trips. The interior has held up well - - - - the seats still look like new! And I actually like the center-mounted gauges; steering wheel and hands dont obstruct their viewing. Not affected by the recent Toyota recalls. The only thing that I can complain about is that I wish she had a little more power.

A very good car. Its little weak engine accelerates it just fine, thanks to the light weight of the car and decent aerodynamics. The car rides smoothly and quietly. In fast turns you do feel some body roll. The center- mounter instrument cluster is a great feature, it makes driving easier when a cop is behind you. Switching your eyes from the speedo, to the cop in the rearview, then to the road has never been easier. Also has an excellent stereo. And Ive never seen so much storage in a vehicle! It has Toyota reliability, but the interior quality could have been better.

I went to the dealership looking for a used car but I mentioned that I just wanted to look at the Echos and I looked at the two door, went on a test drive and didnt even glance at any other cars. I cant really explian why I like it, but I just do. Maybe it is the killer sound system upgrade, I dont know. I dont think the outside is cartoony or really that wierd looking, but I am 20 so that probably makes a difference.
