Pros:
  • Spacious interior, crossover-besting cargo space, comfortable ride, simple controls on lower trims, commendable off-road performance for a wagon.

  • Lacks agility, numb-on-center steering, awkward styling.

  • 4.5 month review - 2010 Subaru Outback

The 2.5 L engine is plenty for highway acceleration and high altitude driving. I like the interior design and look. All the controls on the dashboard and steering wheel are comfortable and intuitive. The AC is sufficiently powerful. The music system is ok with the circle surround and speed adaptable volume features. The driver and passenger space is plenty. There is good front, side, and rear visibility. I like the cubby below the cargo floor. Initially I found the drive to be floaty and strongly affected by crosswinds and passing semi-trucks at highways speeds. So I replaced the rear sway bar with a thicker 19 mm STI bar and the ride improved considerably. I definitely recommend the car!

  • edmunds review is very wrong - 2010 Subaru Outback

I again read the edmunds review and i find it very flawed. Most American like the new styling. Its clean and crisp and classy. The highway handling is great but i cant comment on off road as i havent taken it off road. The mileage is great. 30.5 mpg first tank with wife, dog and all our gear. Second tank i will hit over 500 miles. I drove the 2009 model outback and chose not to buy it, but this year, well, they did it all well. Take it from a guy that drives and buys one. Any why was it chosen the SUV crossover of the year? Edmunds, get your head in gear and rate this car higher. It sure is.

  • best all around family car - 2010 Subaru Outback

First time Subaru owners and were liking it so far. We have nearly 6000 miles on the car in just 2 months. We are very pleased with the comfort level while traveling on long trips. It has been in a foot of snow in the Cascade Mountains and on the beach at Pismo. We have driven in major rain, crossed creeks, traveled muddy roads and busy cities streets. It is the most stable car Ive ever driven and that includes the 4X4 trucks Ive owned. We are getting 27-30 mpg on the highway and about 24 around town. The performance level is surprising for a four cylinder motor. The CVT Transmission is the whole reason the engines feels more powerful than it actually is. Highly recommend this SUV.

Traded a 1997 Ford Explorer for this 2.5i Outback Limited. Had owned a new 1980 Subaru hatchback and thought of Subarus as small cars. Surprise! Overall the 2010 Outback is as big as the 97 Explorer. Some dimensions are bigger, some smaller, but overall its about the same size. Its very comfortable, quiet, and a pleasure to drive. Took a 350 mile round trip last Saturday, through very hilly country, and averaged 31.5 mpg. Yes I drove conservatively, 55 to 60 mph mostly (hit 70 only once). I am more enthusiastic about this car than any car Ive bought since my Mercur XR4TI. Subaru, you really got it right with this one.

  • Great so far - 2010 Subaru Outback

Purchased this 2010 to replace my 2005 that was a love hate relationship. So far the mileage and ride have been great (31 MPG highway). Much better seats (leather) than the 2005. The new roof rail system is a joke and precludes using my existing Yakima racks. The solid side view mirrors are sure to get knocked off in the future, and the economy meter is a gimmick. Give us back a usable roof rail system and a temp meter. The hazard flasher switch is in a bad spot, always hitting it when going into Park. The heater system is taking some getting used to, comes on way hot even when set to 72 or less. Overall a good car but has some quirks.

  • Love my green machine - 2010 Subaru Outback

Car is wonderful except for navigation. As long as you do regular maintenance, the car us a dream.

  • Dont get the navigation - 2010 Subaru Outback
    By -

This is a wonderful car except for the navigation/audio system. However, the backup camera is a necessary. The navigation system is so bad that it is unusable in city traffic situations and is downright unsafe in it characteristics. It does not say street names, is unreadable in the sun or when you turn on your lights during the day, you cannot change or operate the nav system when you are moving. The audio system uses mhz instead of treble and bass settings. Also, no fix in sight! For the money, get aftermarket.

  • Happy with new Suburu - 2010 Subaru Outback

Had to order the car, since we wanted the 6 speed manual, so far, it was worth the wait. Price was very good, for this much vehicle. So far, I am very happy.

  • Love my new 2010 Outback! - 2010 Subaru Outback

Trading my 2002 LL Bean Outback was not easy...but the new 2010 is such a great vehicle I could not resist. We compared it to the Toyota RAV 4 V6 and found the Outback to be more comfortable and smoother, overall. We needed to be able to tow a small camper, and the Outback has the towing capacity we need, without going to a V6. Gas mileage is posted at 22-29, and in the city I am getting almost 25 so far. And did I say the leather seats are soooo nice? This is our 5th Subaru, and we have had good experiences with every one.

  • Great Value - 2010 Subaru Outback
    By -

I have been driving the redesigned Outback for nearly two weeks. I have gotten approximately 23-25 mpg in the city and around 31 mpg on the highway. Power is not great but I can handle a little less power for the great gas mileage. This car has a huge amount of room for a family of four and looks good too. The comfortable seats are an added benefit. This is definitely a great value with AWD on top!
