This Year's Model Updates:

A mild face-lift, a sporty new "3.0 R Limited" trim level, a redesigned instrument panel, the cancellation of the wagon body style and the addition of a few new standard features (including tilt and telescopic steering wheel and an auxiliary audio jack) are the major changes for the 2008 Subaru Legacy line.

Pros:
  • Attractive cabin design with high-quality materials, strong performance in GT trims, standard all-wheel drive, athletic handling, comfortable highway ride, outstanding crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Smallish backseat and trunk, limited availability of stability control and navigation systems, upper trims can be pricey.

  • Best value for the money - 2008 Subaru Legacy

Great car. Tried them all. Audi4, Volvo60, Saab93. This car has the best return for dollars spent. The ride is better then most. It handles great, and I just got 31 mpg on highway speed max at 65 mph to 60 mph for about 120 miles highway only.

  • Happily Pre-Owned - 2008 Subaru Legacy
    By -

So far Ive owned my Legacy for a little over a month and I have to say its by far the best car Ive ever owned. I was in the market for a car that was great on the highway (safe/mpg/fun to drive) since I drive an hour each day to and from work. I will surely be purchasing another Subaru whenever this one bites the dust hopefully a long time from now. I love the sound system, was able to tweak the quality of the speakers through my ipod, the moonroof is wonderful and the car handles like its on rails. I highly recommend anyone that wants a great car at a great price, pre-owned might be the way to go. Low miles for 5k cheaper than new a year old?...be stupid not to.

  • Like a Miata with 4 doors & AWD - 2008 Subaru Legacy

When I bought an Acura TL a year ago, the Legacy was my second choice. I recently reversed that decision and traded the TL for the Suby. What a difference! I love the sports car handling and the AWD because I live in a part of Canada that gets a lot of snow in winter. Its the first car Ive looked forward to driving every day since I sold my Miata. Acceleration is impressive in sport sharp mode. My TL had crazy, dangerous torque steer when accelerating hard in corners. The Suby is tight, predictable, with a slight rear wheel bias. The interior looks great and fits me well, except for the arm rest (needed to get the extender). Bluetooth would be nice, but shouldnt talk on the phone anyway.

  • Family safe but sporty - 2008 Subaru Legacy

I originally looked at this car as it was the best price for the amenities. 5 Star safety, power everything, AWD, 4 cyl gas mileage, plus it has the history of Subaru quality. What I found out after I drove it was that I not only lost the bad mileage of a V6, but I gained the nice power of a 4 cyl Boxer engine. I have no problem getting onto highways, passing, I even safely avoided an accident with the cars superior handling. If youre looking for something safe, but dont want to feel like youre trading your youth, then this car is a must to test drive.

  • Ticking When Turning the Engine Off - 2008 Subaru Legacy
    By -

I bought a 2008 used Subaru Legacy with 20,000 miles on it in March 2009. The only complaint I have is that after I drive it and then turn the engine off, it makes a ticking sound for approx 20 secs as though the engine is cooling down. I never heard this sound in other cars Ive owned, so its new to me. Im wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if its common. The dealer said its the engine cooling, but Im leery of it. The engine sounds more like a cheap car and is not as quiet when started or when driving. Ive owned a Honda and Dodge, Intrepid and they seemed more sturdier than the Subaru Legacy.

  • Traded after 20k Miles - 2008 Subaru Legacy
    By -

I loved my Legacy. Bought it used with 70k miles and traded it with 90k, after the windshield wiper motors went out, the back door handle broke, the wheel bearings need replaced, replaced both oxygen sensors, and the catalytic converter (went out around 88k miles, 8k miles after the emissions warranty went out of effect.) It began to be a money pit. Performance was good, the engine has some power between 3k-4k RPM but is hindered by the outdated 4 speed automatic. AWD was a life saver in the snow. Drove it though 11" of snow and didnt get stuck once. MPG was better than EPA estimates, 95% highway driving returned a consistent 28-29 MPG. If it was more reliable, I would still have it!

  • A 3 series beater - 2008 Subaru Legacy
    By -

Researched small AWD sport sedans for over 3 months and drove the Audi A4, BMW 328i, Acura TSX, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo 2.5. The Legacy GT out performs all of them at a price that is $10,000 less than the 3 series. Build quality is superb, and the ride is extremely quiet for a 3200 pound sedan. The negatives are: the rear seat is a tad firm, but more than adequate for anyone less than 6 feet on an all day trip and lack of storage compartments. This is my second Subaru (the first being a forester, which has 71,000 miles on it, and has been trouble free). The Legacy GT is quick, quiet and handles superbly - a truly remarkable car at an attractive price, compared to its competition.

  • Great Car! - 2008 Subaru Legacy

I LOVE this car. No regrets on my purchase. Car feels and looks much more expensive then it is. Gotten into some sticky driving situations and it handled awesome. Can hardly wait for the snow.

  • 2008 Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Turbo 5A - 2008 Subaru Legacy
    By -

After owing German performance sedans for the past 15 years, I test drove the 2008 Legacy 2.5 GT Limited with the 2.5 turbo boxer four mated with the five-speed automatic trans. I absolutely loved the car. It looked good. The interior was well-appointed. The steering was precise. The handling was exceptional. The ride was very good. The engine was surprisingly responsive and powerful. The price was extremely competitive. The only negative is the automatic transmission. The gear changes are sluggish and delayed. Even when manually changing gears with the paddle shifter, there is significant delay. If not for the auto trans, it gets all "10s".

  • Great car for the price - 2008 Subaru Legacy
    By -

This car has everthing you want and the quality of material they used is worth its price. Handling is really smooth, gas mileage is not that bad but its not that great, that what you would expect from AWD car anyway. Over all I love this car because of the shape and features that it offers for the price.
