This Year's Model Updates:

The Relay is an all-new "crossover sport van." Think of it as a minivan with an SUV-like front end.

Pros:
  • Smooth ride and handling, lots of nifty interior storage spaces, innovative multimedia storage system, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Engine power and refinement not up to class leaders, no side curtain airbags.

I have owned my 2005 Saturn Relay for a little more than a month now and have some initial first impressions worth noting. First, of the four like minivans GM is building I feel by far that this is the most attractive of the group. I did notice an intermittent issue with the radio where when you turn it on there would be no sound or the screen would go dark for a second but that seems to have resolved itself. Also the passanger side power sliding door didnt work for a few minutes one day but that seems to also have resolved itself. Otherwise, I have found this to be a very comfortable vehicle with plenty of room and creature comforts to keep the whole family happy for miles and miles.

  • Man, its hot in here - 2005 Saturn Relay

This is a very loud vehicle to drive. This is a very hot vehicle to drive. This is a very difficult vehicle to clean. The A/C doesnt get very cold. When drying the exterior after washing, it is very difficult to get the "spots" off of it. My husband is very particular about his cars, and this one has gotten the better of him. The power of this vehicle is lacking as well. Wish it took off a little quicker.

  • Reeling in the Relay - 2005 Saturn Relay

In general I like the car. The first year I owned it the A/C wasnt strong at all. This past summer I found the A/C to work much more efficiently. The ride is average, the road noise is below average. I love the styling of the van. Its what encouraged me to purchase it along with the built in DVD player that my daughter plays video games on as well as watch movies. For a large cargo area that this van has, I found there was more room in the Chrysler/Dodge/Honda vans. I was sold on the look for the most part.

  • Happy with my Relay - 2005 Saturn Relay

We purchased our Saturn with only 11000 miles on it from the dealer. It has a smooth ride and is very comfortable. My 4 kids have loved the dvd player and the option to listen to their music and play video games. It comes with a normal plug outlet, very cool! This has come in handy for video games and for vacuming the van. The only problems I have had with the Relay is with the traction stability control system (had it fixed 2X now) and I feel the rotors are cheap. My Relay shakes going down the mountain roads. I was told they have shaved the rotors as much as they can so they will need to be replaced at my next brake job.

  • Still not sure. - 2005 Saturn Relay
    By -

Weve had our Relay for about 16 months and Im not as happy as I originally was. The molding on the outside is coming off and there is a grating noise everytime I accelerate. There are so many mystery noises its almost unbearable. The door creaks everytime you touch it, as well as the clicking of the DVD player. Weve loved having the DVD player, but my kids are getting as used to it as the radio and no longer is used as often. Overall, Im just not sure the quality is there. But, I guess you get what you pay for.

  • First year model - 2005 Saturn Relay

The Saturn view really doesnt look like a minivan which I consider a plus. There are lots of nice features on our Relay 3 which make driving it a joy. It sits up high for good view with other high profile vehicles. The biggest complaint I have after driving it 1,000 miles is the overhead rack system. Its supposed to be convenient storage but the DVD player rattles unmercifully. If its cold outside its almost unbearable. Either Saturn is going to have to do something to correct this oversight or theyre going to have a lot of them in the shop with unhappy customers. I know ours will be in the shop until they make it stop. Otherwise its a great vehicle.

  • Love the car, minus the Kazoo noise - 2005 Saturn Relay
    By -

We have had our RELAY for 9 months now and we absolutely love everything about it except a very loud and annoying "kazoo" noise. We love the way it looks, the way it drives, and all the toys that come standard as opposed to other makes who charge for every little extra add-on. However in the last 9 months we have had our van in the shop 7 times! Ridiculous for a new vehicle. 4 times for this kazoo noise. It literally sounds like someone is playing an obniouxiously loud kazoo above the drivers head. The dealer has had GM engineers to look at it and no one can figure it out. After 4 tries they basically said we cant fix it deal with it. We are currently filing a lemon law claim.

Appearance and performance wise I like it. However, I must of bought the one built on a Monday or Friday. It has several minor but annoying problems. The annoying part about all these things is that they do not happen consistent enough for the dealer to note the problems to fix. 1. Wind noise from front window at highway speed and windy days. 2. Four times in two months the Radio & CD did not function in the morning. The radio shows a signal being received but no sound. 3. The back side window on the driver side rattles when you close the door. Not always. These things are weird and again just plain annoying. Should not have these problems with a new vehicle.

  • Quite a nice van - 2005 Saturn Relay
    By -

This van is fun to drive and has lots of room for the kiddos. Weve also fit quite a lot of cargo in the back, even with kids aboard. The fuel economy is poor, and so far, does not live up to even the mileage range listed on the sticker. If we leave the fuel out of it, its a rockin van!

  • We Like It But Its Not Perfect - 2005 Saturn Relay
    By -

We recently purchased our Saturn and love all the bells and whistles. Between the amount of options and room we got for the money and working with the Saturn dealership, we are very satisfied. As first time mini-van owners, we were happy not to have to give up some of the comforts and looks of our old SUV while getting the room of a van.
