This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

I am a loyal Nissan owner for over 12 yrs. 91 240sx, 85 maxima, 2000 maxima, and now 2004 maxima 3.5 SL. I got this car fully loaded but w/ out navigation since I dont have a problem finding my way around town. This is the best overall maxima yet. Interior is roomy, plenty of trunk space, comfortable, sleek, and very modern comtemporary design overall. Bose systems is great! Acceleration is smooth w/ a quite comfortable ride. My wife loves it! Great family car and reliability is the best in its class.

Think twice before buying a Maxima. Yes Im sold on the horsepower and the beauty of the exterior...but this horse needs to be shot. With less than 17K miles Ive had to replace the rotors, struts, one tire (should replace all others)and the chrome trim that runs across top of the car. The turning radius is horrible...buy this car and youll become an expert at 3 point turns! Im afraid the beauty of this car is only skin deep...youve been warned...shell seduce you with her looks and power, but leave you sitting on the sideline (or in the service waiting area) with all the other Maxima owners.

  • Shimmy in Wheel, warped rotots, etc.! - 2004 Nissan Maxima

This review will change your mind about the Maxima. My mother & I both have the exact same 04 SE & we both have had the exact same problems. Bad shaking in the steering wheel at higher speeds, warped rotors that re-warp after being cut (more shaking), cupped tires & alignment problems. Both cars now have 15 & 18K mi, respectively, and its unbelievable how similar our problems are. Many alignments, balanced tires, replaced rotors, cupped tires & the problems just come right back. Dealer has not been helpful, thinks we are crazy. My cupped tires, warped rotors & wheel vibration started at 3K miles & remain today after many "fixes," I am fed up & ready to trade in! No other issues!

The 2004 maxima has great handling and a high level of comfort. Sports performance coupled with luxory, in my opinion, give this car the highest rating in its class. Ive been driving this car for 8 months now and I havent found one inconsistency. I have other drivers in beamerz and benzs doing double takes. I love this car!

Weve had our 04 Maxima for five months and every morning it is such a pleasure to drive to work. The Bose sound system is wonderful. The size and comfortably of the interior is also a real pleasure when transporting others. The car handles very well in any kind for weather.

  • Worst car Ive owned - 2004 Nissan Maxima

This is the 3rd and last Maxima I will own. The car is/was beautiful and had all the perks, leather, heated seats, sunroof, heated steering wheel, Bose. I always got compliments on what a good looking car that is was. But that was it. During the 5 years of owner ship, replaced brakes 3 times, rotors twice, 3 wheel bearings, 1 steering knuckle, AC system had a leak at factory fitting, the rear end could not be aligned and ate tires every few months, and the transmission started to go (Google it). I hear many of the same complaints from this $30k+ car. Got to the point that I did not enjoy driving it because I was worried of what would go wrong next. Now I drive a 2009 Hyundai Sonata that I love!

  • Not Bad! - 2004 Nissan Maxima

Owned it for 3 weeks now so, I think its time to write a review. I was a bit disappointed on the the first 3 days after I picked up the car. I found a broken (split) rubber molding on the upper right corner of the rear right passenger door. I was surprised that Nissan didnt catch this problem while conducting their quality assurance on this at the factory. But the staff at Extreme Motors really did an excellent job of fixing the problem. They ordered the part for me right away and fixed the problem as soon as the part arrived. The quality of the repair was excellent.

Great vehicle. No problems since purchasing. Excellent performance with unbeatable speed. Interior room is great, better than any other car in this price range with similar performance.

  • Overall I like it, but have had issues - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I bought this car used with about 36K miles on it. I previously had a 2002 Maxima GLE which I like but wanted the newer body style. I noticed fairly shortly after I purchased this one that the car shifted hard between 1st/2nd and 2nd/3rd gears and much harder during downshifting (automatic trans). I also thought that my older Maxima was better made. This one just looks cheaper inside.

  • Bad Max - 2004 Nissan Maxima

This is my 3rd Maxima and this 2004 is just great. I have had both men/women stop and ask what year is the car and how do I like it. The only thing I can say is that the car is "Great". Nissan really did out do their selfs making this model and should they keep up they will have a great edge on the car market. This is my (7) new car and (3) have been Maximas, as long as Nissan makes a great car I will purchase one.
