  • Fun To Drive! - 2000 Mercury Mystique

This is a very underrated car - with a 5-speed manual, the V6 engine really rips, and the handling is in the BMW/Audi league. If you dont need the status and gadgets that go with a BMW 3-series, this car brings you the performance and handling for half the cost. And it even came standard with leather, power drivers seat, etc., which are *options* in the low-end BMW. Nearly everyone who has ridden in it has asked me "what kind of car is this?". I guess nobody seems to expect a boring Mercury sedan to blast off and zip around corners better than the more expensive, yet smaller, new Jetta, and in the same league as cars more than twice its twice. Rock on!

This car and year had a lot of recalls. I have used this car for many trips and have driven it all over the place with no problems. I warm it up in the winter and make sure the oil is always changed regularly. While it is not powerful (4 cyl), it has always been reliable and has a pretty smooth ride.

  • 1998 Mercury Mystique 2.0L 5 Speed (Perfect College Car) - 1998 Mercury Mystique

Got this car for college for $1600 back in August with 117k on it. It now has 126k and I gotta say I really am impressed with this car. Very spacious upfront, huge trunk for how small the car appears to be, the 2.0L with the 5 speed is an absolute blast, transmission is pretty responsive, the independent rear suspension adds a responsive handling characteristic that makes the car quite good in the corners, the mpg is incredible (rated at 21 city, I usually get 24-26, hwy rated at 32, driving 70 mph I get 35, 80-85 mph I get 32). Grew up driving camaros, f150s, expeditions, Datsun/Nissan Z cars, SRT4s and I gotta give props to this little car for the amount of fun it is.

  • A great car that his highly undervalued! - 1998 Mercury Mystique

98 Mercury Mystique bought w/ 82,000km in Dec. 02 and have driven it over 60,000km (38,000 miles). Interior - well-built, attractive - nothing worn, broken, or faded - after cleaning, interior looks new - no rattling due to solid constuction - excellent seats for comfortable long- term highway driving Exterior - not the sharpest car but overall is attractive - paint is durable and still shines Overall - car performs very well - plenty of power - great highway driving - sport-tuned suspension provides a smooth ride with little roll when turning Have not had one mech. problem with this car. Recommend to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable vehicle

I have had constant catalytic converter problems, however they are covered under manufacturers warranty up to 75,000 miles. Good visibility. Love the sunroof that can open or pop up (moon roof) Roomy trunk.

I have had my car almost a year. It is a great car to have. Especially when caring around friends or your little brother and his friends. It is kind of though a good family car not so much for a teenager. It is great though for a 16 year old that is just starting to drive. It is a great car. It runs great with almost 80,000 miles.

4cyl GS. Had to write a positive review after reading many of the others. Bought the car in 2002 with 40000, and so far has far outlasted my expectations. After 187,000 miles, this car is running great. I have changed 2 water pumps, 1 timing belt, 1 thermostat, and 1 blinker switch. For the money, this is the best car I have ever owned. Changed oil every 5k and Tranny fluid every 30K. Follow the recommended service items and problems should be minimal. Granted, I dont get any double-takes from the ladies here, but for everyday transportation, it has been great.

  • Truly european... - 1998 Mercury Mystique

What i mean is like a lot of european cars like Alfa or WV, When it works its awesome. V6 acceleration, handling, ABS-less 4 disc braking, everything is there exept reliability. I didnt had problem with the man. transmission, power steering and radiator. Everything else broke; I even lost a wheel!(broken studs.) Biggest repetitive problems came from the front suspension and bearings. The instrument cluster PCB failed intermittently and the infamous plastic impeller of the water pump. Expensive ignition module broke at 60 miles, engine mounts, and one of the too many O2 sensors lit the "check engine" intermittently. Too bad for Ford, it could have been as good, even better than the Mazda 626

  • My OK Car - 1998 Mercury Mystique
    By -

I bought my 4cycl car from a private owner 4 years ago with 98,000 miles on it and now I currently have 161,000 miles on it. It has been a good little car, but I have had to put some work into it. The little things seem to be going wrong with it. When I got it I found the thermostat control sensor was messed up and it actually reads hotter than the engine is actually running. This last fall I had to replace the fuel regulator and now the car just stops running for no reason. The mechanic cant even figure it out. But I will keep on driving it because it is a good little car. Its fun to drive and cheap. Once its dead I will probably go get another one.
