After over a years worth of driving, including a bitterly cold winter, I can attest to the value of the 2002 Protege5. What initially sold me on this model was its driveability and it continues to demonstrate this day in and day out. But not far behind, is its reliability; Mazda has refined this model to eliminate problems and nuisances (although that back window could be bigger). Overall, an excellent value.

Was attracted to this car at first mainly for its styling. After taking it for a test drive, we didnt look any further. The whole packeage impressed us so much and after finding the right dealer bought the car on the spot.

  • P5 in Silver - 2002 Mazda Protege5

This review is for a P5 with no options (which is strange, seeing as how it is loaded with amenities already). About the only thing this car is small on is the effort to drive it! I have only had it for one tank of gas, but have found it an extreme pleasure to drive. The storage capacity is great (about three weeks of groceries for a family of four). I am a little disappointed in the amount of noise that enters the cabin. I also promptly removed the luggage rack to reduce wind noise at speed. The stereo is easy to operate and has great sound. Shifting through the gears is nearly effortless. And, for a little car, the get-up-and-go is wonderful.

  • Happy Im Driving A Protege5 - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Overall I am very satified with my 2002 Mazda Protege5. It is extremely fun to drive. Looks great. I have 3 complaints about the car and they are: 1. Moonroof very noisy. Can not drive with it open. 2. Cup holders not deep enough, bottled water tips if full. 3. Difficult to drive on roads with water. In FL we have heavy downfalls of rain..when roads are wet with still water, vehicle is difficult to handle. Must travel at very low speed.

About 20 years ago I had a 76 Ford Capri from Germany. Havent found anything thats as fun to drive until now. This car holds the road very well and almost seems to dare you to take that turn a little faster. It has cured me need for a motorcycle for now.

  • p5 over 1 year and 25,000 miles later... - 2002 Mazda Protege5

We are a 1-car family and rely on our p5 for everything. We have taken 2 1000+ mi trips in this car and a 2500+ mile trip. All with the baby. Still like the taught suspension and great steering feel. Fun to drive. Easy to drive. Can get around slower traffic with ease. Very stable and safe at higher speeds. Interior is squeak and rattle-free and materials are holding up well. Easy to stay comfy driving long distances. Still get plenty of "cool car" comments! Needs more power and less noise. No mechanical problems. We will probably keep it for 4 more years or up to 2 kids. Over 2 kids, shut up and get a minivan.
