Overview & Reviews
For 2003, power sliding doors are an option for both the LX and ES trim levels. A towing package and a cargo organizer are two other new options. Also, an alarm and engine immobilizer are now part of a security package, and a cassette player is available on the ES trim level. The LX trim now rides on 16-inch wheels. Inside, floor and cargo mats are now standard on both trim levels, while outside, you'll see a new exhaust tip.
- Compact and maneuverable, confident handling manners, roll-down windows in the sliding doors.
- Limited maximum cargo capacity, lacks some features found in the other minivans.

whats not to like? - 2003 Mazda MPV
By wkwood - November 30 - 10:00 am200 hp and ft/lbs of torque in a minivan that is 7/8 the size of its competitors. Zoom Zoom. So it fits in the garage nicely next to the sedan, and I especially like the passenger side windows that go down. If passengers want to wait in the car while I run in for somethingn they can. And its really quiet inside on the highway. What remains to be seen is reliability. Im a little concerned that its a ford duratec V6 under the hood, so well see.

mazda mpv - 2003 Mazda MPV
By smittchell4 - March 26 - 2:00 amIts not as quite on trips as I would like for it to be,and on same long trip, seats were not comfortable. Drive well plenty of pick up for a van. Asked if was fun to drive? ITS A VAN, not a sports car!

Good van with a very good price - 2003 Mazda MPV
By kenh - January 6 - 10:00 amThe MPV is smaller than I expected. I had a small wheelbase 95 Voyager, and this seems like it has less room. From my point of view is built more for Asian and European roads than American. I personally like the smaller size and firmer ride. If youre expecting a roomy, cushy American highway cruiser, this is not it. Handles well, acceptable acceleration, and relatively quiet. So far, no reliability problems of any kind.

Well satisfied - 2003 Mazda MPV
By Anna Wells - December 28 - 10:00 amWe moved into a mini-van when my 3rd child was born. 2 yrs old and 24,000 miles. 5 yrs later still driving it, has been on many vacations, have done only routine maintenance, and have replaced the tires once. The transmission may be going, but up until now, it has been very reliable and a great vehicle for my family.

Fix the Transmission - 2003 Mazda MPV
By Joe - November 21 - 7:36 pmWatch the transmission. Very annoying clunks, which make me worry it will fail in later years. Very cool looking. Small, but if thats what you want you wont be disappointed. I bought mine new and overall is a good value.

Good Value - 2003 Mazda MPV
By Tom G - April 19 - 12:53 pmWe bought this vehicle new and have had an overall positive experience with it. It handles very well and although it is a smaller van, it has met the space needs of our family quite well (3 kids, mom and dad). Reliability has been above average but not great... no major problems. Weve taken it camping on some very rough roads over the years and it has come through unscathed.

Gone the distance so far.... - 2003 Mazda MPV
By Melissa - February 18 - 10:16 amOriginal owner. Have replaced the oil pan when it cracked at 95K, one tail light has gone out 2 times. Get up and go is non-existent. It eventually gets to speed, but it loses power up hills that other car accelerate up. Tow package doesnt really allow you to tow safely the claimed weight. No major breakdowns, have replaced rotors at 100K, but that is bad info from the last people that changed my tires. Been through 2 sets of tires all around. Gas mileage has continually gone down through the years. That is greatest disappointment. Rear air not near cool enough. Needs bigger fan. My boys were still hot.

How to fix the transmission - 2003 Mazda MPV
By RogersinLeroy - January 11 - 5:56 amEletronic transmission requires a software upgrade done by a dealer who knows how to do it. Classic of Mentor was the one who fixed the banging into 3rd issue that everyone seems to have. Not crazy about the marriage of Ford drivetrain with this van. The V6 needs to rev freely to get a full van moving, and as a result MPG is less than expected. Fuuny that a leading consumer magazine rated this so highly with all the complaints I see about the transmission and exhaust.
