This Year's Model Updates:

Four new Focus models debut for 2002: the ZX5 five-door hatchback, the well-equipped ZTW wagon, the sport-tuned SVT hatchback and the Mach Audio ZTS. No matter what Focus you pick in 2002, a power moonroof can now be ordered. The high-end ZTS Sedan loses its standard ABS and crummy fake wood dash trim while gaining a rear spoiler. An in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on ZX5, ZTS and ZTW but optional on all other Foci except the LX Sedan.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:

  • What a joke! - 2002 Ford Focus

I have had my Focus for 11 months. During this time, it has been in the shop for a total of 28 days. I had the engine replaced at 8,000 miles because of an internal coolant leak that contaminated the oil. I have had three sets of brakes put on it. The computer solenoids that control the emissions system have been replaced. And last but not least the gas cap was defective and had to be replaced. I am in the process of working with the selling dealer to buy it back as a lemon. This will be my last Ford!!!

  • Average car with some big goofs - 2002 Ford Focus

I bought this car used a year ago. I liked the look of the car, the format, and I have heard good things about it from Euro owners. After owning it for a year I have discovered cosmetic problems and handling problems, as well as build problems. The carpeting doesnt match the contour of the body so it is pulling away from the trim, and actually tearing. The rear suspension is dangerous, skipping across bumps instead of absorbing them. There are lots of rattles caused by poorly fit plastics. The transmission is okay, but could shift more smoothly - it seems to be hunting for the right gear sometimes, with reluctance to downshift (you have to punch the pedal)

  • Ford Quality??????????????? - 2002 Ford Focus

I purchased a black SVT Focus about one year ago. The car is a blast to drive when the road gets twisty but lacks the kind of power that I crave. The chassis is very well balanced, the handling is nuetral and the car is very easy to rotate. I would prefer a little less body roll and better high speed stability as the car is a little twitchy in high speed sweepers (100mph +). My major complaint with the car is the quality. I had to get a new power steering pump, alternator, and now the intake runner control quit working. This in addition to several different noises and rattles that emminated from the exhaust.

  • When they are bad, they are really bad - 2002 Ford Focus

This is the worst car I have ever owned. The fule mileage has been awful. I am a conservative driver and have had it to the dealer multiple times with no result. The car stalls, randomly downshifts, and has had to have a fuel pump replaced. I went with a Ford because I trusted that they really had improved. What a disapointment. My 16 year old Camry with 160,000 miles is more reliable and gets better gas mileage. Check these cars very carefully. I have friends that love theirs, but when there is a problem, the car is a real pain in the rear. Oh, and the 16 inch rims make new tires far more expensive, so consider getting the other model with the 15 inch rims to save some money.

  • A real lemon - 2002 Ford Focus

My experience with the Focus wagon was extremly bad very nice car but unreliable, was in the shop every other day begining on the first week of purchase. Electrical problems and front brake problems also including cooling problems which the dealer could not fix during warranty time.

  • Not the best Ive owned by a long shot - 2002 Ford Focus

I bought this car because I could get more features and a bigger engine for some $3000 less than I would have paid for a Toyota Celica. Now, five years and some $5000 more than the cost of the average Celica over this time, all I can say is it was a bad choice. Pretty much all that could go wrong did, coolant system twice, CD chager twice, A/C twice, clutch, thermostat, power windows, brakes need constant work, windshield sealant, trunk bounces back every other time, noisy. Its the last Ford Ill ever own. About a year ago I quit putting money into it, all I do is maintenance. Since then the CD changer and the drivers side window have kicked it, we now own two Toyotas. This one is errand car.

  • Dont bother - 2002 Ford Focus

Crap quality, and crap reliability. Ive been in the shop numerous times. Move on to a different car before you buy one of these lemons.

  • Worst Car Ive Owned - 2002 Ford Focus

I bought this vehicle to avoid nickel-and-dime problems that were starting to appear in my 2000 Sunfire. Little did I know that Id have the Focus in the shop four times over the last seven months. This has quickly become the most unreliable car Ive ever driven, and Ill never buy a Ford again. Ill be trading this car for what I knew I should have bought in the first place - a Honda Civic.

  • Lemon - 2002 Ford Focus

In 4 years I have had to replace the front rotors and brake shoes (the first year!), replace two window motors and regulators, replace the power steering pump, rack & pinion unit, battery, CD player, factory dry rotted tires, and the air bag light keeps coming on. The car looks brand new inside and out, is regularly maintenance, has few passengers (no kids), is driven carefully and has few miles on it. A mechanic said you have a 50/50 chance on getting a good one. Guess which % I was in? Please, dont buy one!
