This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

  • Design flaws apparent - 2002 Ford Explorer

At 2 months we replaced the CD player which quit, then it was the ignition fell out of the steering column onto the floor, the master control for the power windows on the driver side caught fire, and the transmission and various sensors gone at 46000 miles, very disappointed in the overall reliability of this vehicle rearend and bearing are next and this vehicle though equipped for towing has never towed a thing, all miles are highway with some mountain driving which it did not handle in Rocky Mtns in summer, quit for lean fuel mix.

The Truck is good, but the quality of parts is so bad, cheaper material or low quality in asembly process, cause problems like internal sounds or engine problems.

  • Love It, But Very Unreliable - 2002 Ford Explorer

I want to say that I do really like this car when its working. Tranny went out at 30k and now again at 55k. When I asked the service superisor if it was my fault, I was told it is due to junky parts and that I could not have done anything to stop this from happening. Not a good sign. Other problems include back hatch rattling open constantly, water pump replaced, wiper motors gave out, paint between doors bubbling. Doesnt like to start when weather is between 30 and 35 F. Sometimes dies in reverse when first started. It is comfy, loads of room for those tall people, and decent gas mileage for a big SUV.

  • It EXPLODED! - 2002 Ford Explorer

I HAD pretty good luck with my Explorer...until yesterday. I was literally just driving (NO BUMPS) down the road yesterday and the whole back window EXPLODED into my truck. The metal the encases the window was also completely bent out. I will now be without a car for at least a week and a half with no real solution for getting around. The dealership claims that they have seen this problem a lot recently and that its a design flaw. How about a RECALL? Someone could have been seriously hurt if they had been in the backseat!

  • Do Not Buy - 2002 Ford Explorer

I love/Hate this vehicle. It drives great it handles very well and it looks good. But I am sick of things going wrong. The AC lasted a month. the back glass dam near fell off. The child locks would trap people in the back seat. An engine sensor died. the passenger window whistles. An idler pulley bearing went out and threw the belt. The drivers seat is loose and the dam black panels between the side windows are fading out. If I would have know this I would not have purchased this vehicle.

  • Safety/Security that they talk about so. - 2002 Ford Explorer

DOES NOT HAVE AS A SAFETY FEATURE dusk sensing headlamps, auto delay off headlamps, which are a very important saftey feature for woman at night, also does not have daytime driving lights, which I thought all vehicles must have.

  • Powertrain is terrible - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

My 02 has had a leak in fuel line, new cat converter, fly wheel in transmission, clutches in differential, blower motor in air conditioner, front power seat motor, had to turn rotors at 20k miles. This thing is a lemon. Stay away. I cant afford to keep it and the TMV is so low now that I cant afford to sell it either.

  • Done at 3 years & 75K - 2002 Ford Explorer

Lots of problems. Transmission lurches, rotor failures, rear hatch latch, poor CD player, dashboard electronics failures. Now electrical problems causing the car to die hard on the road. Took the dealer 3 days to find & fix a number of electrical problems due to worn/corroded wires & contacts. Yikes! This after only 3 years & 75K on hwy and in garage. Selling it while I still can...

  • Exploder - 2002 Ford Explorer

List of repairs under warranty 1) Rear ABS sensor 2) Gasket around thermostat 3) Rear Differential 4) Pitted rotors 5) rotors out of round. Poor quality is the norm with the Explorer. Only benefit is Ford dealer/customer services does seem to care and has been very helpful.
