This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

Love the 3rd row seats. They have come in handy.

My wife and I have been driving our new 2002 Ford Explorer Ltd. for about 1 1/2 months now. We think it is a winner. The new design in which it rides lower and wider is safer and gives you more control and more of a big sedan like ride. We traded in a 1999 Explorer and have the earlier model to compare it to. We liked the older model, but the 2002 is much improved.

My 02 XLT 4x4 now has 23k on it after the third trip to the dealership the drivers seat belt still does not retract properly and ends up closed in the door most of the time, This SUV has the 3:71 ratio..from 50-59 mph it screams.Been looked at and "fixed" twice and I was told by dealership that Ford is now trying to address the problem..hmm I guess Ford didnt manufacture cars with rear differentials until 02. I have been a faithful Ford customer for over 30 years..now I have come to see why others are buying imports..one word QUALITY..Ford just dosent have it.

Bought my Explorer with 20K miles on it. This is/was my second Explorer. All vehicles were 4X4. My first Explorer had in excess of 117K miles on it. Both Explorers had the 6cly in it. I towed a travler trailer through the mountains of New England and had plenty of power. I also towed a 22 ft boat. I have not towed with my second explorer. Ive driven it from Canada to Fl. forging rivers, hunting, fishing, snow, rain, family vacations, Boy Scouts and have few issues with its performace. 161,000 miles on my current Explorer and it may be time to replace it due to transmission trouble. With that many miles who could complain? Only two questions? Another Explorer or an F150?

This is my second Explorer with a bad transmission, the first one was a 1996. When I wanted to have the tranny fluid changed my Ford dealer told me it wasnt a serviceable item. Funny, the owners manual says to change fluid every 30K miles. Also, at 75K miles the back wheel bearing went bad. I also had to have the rear axle seals replaced at 60K miles since I was leaking axle fluid on my garage floor. Brakes wear quickly as well. Too many problems to consider this vehicle dependable and/or economical. Will not buy or recommend another.

Varied intermittent problems pointing to poor quality. Radio turns on with no key in ignition. Rear defrost bars in middle of window dont work. Interior is cheap. Plastic around window controls separates from door. Leather is more like pleathor. Brakes/backing plates made with cheap metal. Rusts easily. 4 wheel drive in to be repaired. Replaced transmission at 44,000 miles. Car has had two recalls. blah blah blah blah blah. Maybe I got the only bad one.

Its quite possibly the smoothest vehicle that I have ever driven. While Ford usually uses smaller engines 4.6L its faster than other vehicles with larger engines.Leather seats, Audio system is an in dash 6 CD Changer, 290 watts going to 7 premium speakers. and two 12 inch subwoofers rated at 900 watts max each, thats a total of over 2000 watt potential. the sony class D amplifier delivers that earthshaking power in style.

I totaled my 2002 Chevy Blazer in December 2006 and that was the best acccident because I found my Explorer. This is car is the best and I couldnt ask for anything more. It is reliable, no major problems. Get the oil changed every 3 months and Im all set. I feel bad for everyone that had a bad experience because this is really an excellent machine.

I went from a sports car to an SUV. This is the first one Ive owned and I love it. Tons of room for kids and pets, great exterior styling, decent performance, and great reliability are reasons why this truck has won my heart. If youre looking for an SUV that will meet all your needs and make you feel good driving down the road, then this is the SUV for you!!!

193,000 miles so I am not complaining! Second Explorer and the first got this same type of miles - just change your oil regularly. Some problems with the rear hatch - glass struts were recalled. Hatch cracked and was replaced at my cost although every other explorer Ive seen out there has this same kind of cracking. Very comfortable car and got decent mileage - 16-18 on average.
