This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

  • Best SUV on the road - 2002 Ford Explorer

Smoothest SUV ride I have ever experienced. I never though an SUV would be as comfortable and handle so nicely.

I like the amount of space the option of the 3 row seat and the comfort of the automobile in general. I like the new look ie. wider frame. With the wider frame I feel there is less of a chance of roll over. I have test drove Exolorers before and I think the 2002 Explorer rides better than the older models. When purchasing the Explorer I would not think that one would expect the SUV to ride like a car. The Explorer is not made like a car nor is it made to be a car. The Explorer is a 4x4 automobile. If you want a vehicle that rides like a car then buy a car. I give the Explorer a Thumbs UP!!

  • Awesome!! -- Explorer Limited - 2002 Ford Explorer

I must admit that I was definitely NOT a Ford Explorer fan at all -- but that all changed when I stepped inside a sleek, black Ford Explorer Limited that stole my heart, while making it race at the same time. The 02 Explorer is just a wholly new animal, inside and out and it shows, and feels. The ride is great, the looks are fantastic, and I have already begun to neglect my Lincoln LS and Audi A4 for the Explorer. It is a truly great car with excellent room and the soul of a luxury car. I have only had it for a short time but I can give it my highest recommendation without reservation (HAPPY TRAILS!!)

Be sure to replace all four tires when in need, otherwise the fourwheel drive system shows a slight vibration. Fixed easily with new tires.

i love my truck. Roomy, comfortable, rides and handles extremely well; all the bells and whistles. Cons: Not the greatest gas mileage, but is getting a little better As the proud owner of my fourth Ford Explorer, I can honestly say the 2002 Explorer is absolutely the best model yet! New technology, great styling, 3rd row seat. Cons: Gas mileage, ugly key fob. I recently traded an amazing 230,000 mile Honda Accord for a brand new Explorer. The main reason being that I need more space.

Be careful of quick or sudden turns. It took some time to get used to driving in high winds on the freeway. Sometimes it has felt unsteady. It has a high pitch sound when changing gears.

  • Very Good Vehicle - 2002 Ford Explorer

Ive had 2 recall items. No problems with the truck. Rides very well. Great handling and performance with the V8. Pulls like a champ. In town mileage isnt good, what do you expect from a V8 in town. Decent mileage at highway speed, drops off when pushing 80 on the interstate -- no surprise. Better than any other SUV Ive driven or ridden in: Blazer, Trailblazer, Tahoe, Durango, Cherokee. If you dont want to deal with minor defects or factory recalls, dont buy a vehicle; take a cab or rent a limo.

I sold a 94 Explorer with 140,000 trouble free miles so I could get a 2002 model. I like the styling and the smooth shifting 5R55W transmission. I bought this truck used with 49,000 miles on it, so it shows a little wear, but the price was right so I went for it. The 4.0 OHC V6 runs great and everything works and is tight. The rear gears whine a little at speed but I understand this is a common complaint. As I own a transmission repair facility, correcting any drivetrain problems should not be an issue for me. I would recommend an Explorer (used of course, love that low resale value) to anyone who wants a nice truck at a great price.

Purchased after trying many other SUVs both foreign & domestic. Fit our needs all around. Waited for the newer production model that included real bucket seats w/ a headrest, foglamps, leather wheel, & autodim mirror. Used info off the internet (edmunds & others) to get a great deal - $1000 under TMV!

  • Still the SUV King - 2002 Ford Explorer

I recently traded in a 2002 CRV for a Ford Explorer. Some may question this decision however after driving the explorer, you would make the same choice. The Honda was a good car but not truck. The Explorer fits my lifestyle and gives me a comfortable smooth ride. The only question I had was reliability. Well thats still up in the air. I also made the decision base on all of the world wide turmoil. I guess I rather be putting money into a company that is American, not to say I would purchase a quality foreign car. The bottom line is I am extremely happy with my Explorer.
