This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the Expedition gets Ford's BeltMinder audible warning system to remind buyers to buckle up. The XLT can be equipped with a rear video entertainment system for the first time. Eddie Bauer models can be done up in Premier Group packaging, which includes monochromatic exterior paint, second-row captain's chairs, moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights and illuminated running boards.

Pros:
  • Excellent interior design and comfort, wide-ranging versatility, impressive hauling capabilities, available rear-seat entertainment system, great crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Still might be too big for some garages, bias toward on-road comfort hurts off-road capabilities, sloppy handling when pushed.

Gas has gotten too expensive for this truck. Also parking it in most lots is a challenge.

  • Great - Beware of poor $2300 Engine Problems! - 2002 Ford Expedition

Former Explorer owner, upgraded to Expedition. Very good ride design, comfort, size. Mediocre/expected gas mileage. However, after 40K, the right cylinder head cracked, and began leaking oil. Repair of $2300 out of pocket was followed up with complaints. Initially Ford repair shop indicated rebate of $1500, but after several weeks, their "mistake" was corrected to $700 rebate. BAD taste in mouth for Fords quality, as more investigation indicates that this is a "known Issue" with the Triton V8s from this period. Dont know if its been fixed or not, but any time you have major repairs before 50K, beware!

First SUV that I have owed and it has been a great experience. Basically the only problem that I have encountered was the rear windows squeeking when opening they replaced the mechanisms (both windows) and the same thing happened. This occurs mainly during the winter months. Drivers window has a tendency to go up very fast during cold days. Also noticed a hummng noise in tranny when overdrive is turned off dealer says that this is not a problem and I have not had any tranny issue. I do not have the load leveling and my SUV runs pretty smooth, great on long trips, and comfortable. Get about 18-19 on highway, powerful motor (5.4), sometimes dont realize the speed Im going, good pickup for a big SUV. Love her!

This is the largest vehicle I have owned and my wife and I really love it! Before purchasing it, I read reviews like these and with Ford trucks word- of-mouth reputation, I purchased one. I havent regretted it. I use it mostly on long trips. It is fun to drive and I feel safer on the road. Mine is a 2-wheel drive, but it handles great in rain or snow covered roads. Replaced the drivers heated seat element already and the passenger side is getting weaker. $600. dealer cost for one seat repair! Out of warranty, but the dealer paid half. Replaced the brakes, but no mechanical problems yet. Would buy another one!

I love the way this vehicle looks, feels and drives. For an 8 passenger vehicle we expect to have to pay more in gas, but its worth it, even the kids love it. its huge, i feel totally safe in this vehicle, and for some reason driving it, comes naturally. AWESOME!!!!

I purchased the Eddie Bauer version of this truck and I am more than pleased with the perfformance and the quality. The only negitive that I find with this car is the fuel economy.

The Ford Expedition has been a great vehicle for me. The contents of a college dorm room can be crammed into this SUV! Hauling kids and gear on a daily basis is comfortable. Where I live, lots of people drive big vehicles and I feel safer being in one as well. The only problem Ive ever had with the Expedition is the power side mirrors: the directional button doesnt work well.

  • Ford lost a repeat customer - 2002 Ford Expedition

2nd Expedition for this family. First was a 99 XLT - no major problems (windshield wiper issue - and rear wiper motor went - thats it) in 66K miles. 02 Eddie Bauer (subject of this review): After 44K miles: Rear sensing system failed. Drivers heated seat element failed. Minor build issues (annoying) - headlight/foglamp switch fell apart, read quarte pop-out windows always noisy when operating. Transmission FAILED at 44K miles. Ford/dealer not standing behind their product means that I will look at the competition when the lease expires. Ford / dealer - you lost a repear customer.

  • I hate it, husband loves it - 2002 Ford Expedition

Am I the only one that hates driving this vehicle? I feel like Im driving a school bus because its so huge, and when I go to pump gas, it kills me. I long for the compact car where I can jump in and get my moneys worth. Also, I know cars depreciate but I didnt think it would be 18,000 less in 2 years. I finally convince my husband to trade-in to a car that we can both love and save money on. After this car,..Im looking into a hybrid. Overall, I wish I saved my money and bought a Lexus. Worth the price and depreciate less.

This is my 3rd Expedition, I owned a 1997, 1999,2002 and in 2 days I am picking up a 2004 Expedition, which will be our 4th. I just love it and my husband prefers this vehicle to the Explorer. I love that I sit high and can carry anything in the back, I can just about haul anything. I drive some distance to work and I am always comfortable.I have never had a problem with any of them, other than Goodyear tires, they dont last.
