This Year's Model Updates:

The Excursion's final year of production is 2004 so there are few changes from last year. Ford's excellent new 6.0-liter turbodiesel V8 replaces last year's 7.3-liter diesel. Besides offering considerably more horsepower and torque, the new engine has cleaner emissions and gets better gas mileage. Several new options are available; these include wireless headphones for the rear-seat entertainment package and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Body-side cladding and illuminated running boards are no longer available on XLT models. Also note that the trim level structure has been revised slightly, as base XLS and midlevel XLT trim replace XLT Value and XLT Premium.

Pros:
  • Substantial passenger and cargo capacity, impressive towing ability, diesel engine option.
Cons:
  • Unwieldy size, trucklike driving characteristics, poor fuel economy, high sticker price.

  • Brakes Suck - 2004 Ford Excursion
    By -

I have a 2002 that I have replaced the brakes on this vehicle 5 times in 120000 miles. They are terribly undersized for the weight of the vehicle and dealer denies knowledge of any problem, even though I have talked to other owners and mechanics, 100% agree that Ford has a major design problem with the brakes. We finally replaced the brakes with racing brakes that were cross-drilled and slotted to disapate the heat (not a Ford product) and know the brakes are working much better.

  • What are the magazine testers smoking - 2004 Ford Excursion

Every review in the automotive press I read said the Excursion was simply awful. I test drove one and bought it the same day. For the first year I used it in my limousine business to haul folks to and from the airport. A feat the Excursion excells at. Unlike the mag testers I have no problem with manuverability at all. I would not expect this vehicle to handle like a Porsche. I can not honestly think of a single complaint. Possible exception was trouble with the in dash 6CD changer & the monitor in the entertainment package. Both were replaced under warranty.

This is a very nice car. I hope they can improve it, though I do not think that it needs many improvments.

I have found the excursion to be a worthy competitor to the chevy suburban. Although gas mileage is slightly worse than the chevy, the power and driveability of the excursion is unequaled. The steering is more responsive then the chevy even though it is some seven inches longer and approx. 1900 lbs heavier. Do not be intimidated by the size of this vehicle. On the exterior it seems almost too big to control, but when in the drivers seat control is all you will feel. The high stance of the excursion provides superior visability in city and highway traffic. Noise levels are at minimum even when on the highway passing big rigs.

This is our 3rd Excursion. We lemon lawed our 02 because of a thumping noise in the front end, unexpected stalling, and a several squeaks in the interior. Now we have a 2004, which has some of the same troubles. We still like the vehicle and have decided to ignore these troubles....for now.

I had a suburban before my excursion so im used to big suvs. I like the ex. except I taught I would get better fuel economy .I am a big guy 64tall so its pretty comfortable, except it seems like the front seate are to narrow for someone as big as me. On an overall scale of 1-10 I would give it a 7+

  • Great Big Truck - 2004 Ford Excursion

This is an excellent family truck, very capable in the snow and tough driving conditions. Fuel economy is what youd expect from this large truck (I avg about 12 mpg combined), power is outstanding, and bad weather capability is exceptional. Forget parallel parking.

  • 7.3 ltr and love it - 2004 Ford Excursion

We just got back from 6100 miles trip out west, best mileage 20.1, and 17.6 over all. roomiest vehicle ever owned wolud like diffrent front center console, one that would convert to a seat like some others out there. just rotated tires and balanced them, also checked alignment wasnt off enough to change and brakes looked like they never been used. not bad with 13100 miles in just short of six monthes.it didnt come with a rear sway bar so we added one makes big difference.
