Excursions get crystalline headlamp lenses for 2002, as well as "smart" intermittent front and rear wipers. XLTs gain a new auto-lock feature as well as standard third-row child seat tethers with a BeltMinder system. Excursion Limited receives a chrome side strip, automatic climate control and power-adjustable pedals. New options on XLT include power-adjustable pedals and a power front passenger seat. Limited models can be equipped with memory seats and pedals, second-row captain's chairs and redundant controls for climate and audio on the steering wheel. Both XLT and Limited will get a DVD-based entertainment system for rear-seat passengers later this year. Skid plates are no longer optional.

Pros:

Several trips from Lansing, MI, to Portland, ME nonstop, one driver and one tank of diesel (with a tailwind). Visibility and leather driver seat make driving a pleasure. I weigh 240# and get a backache driving luxury sedans in $40-50k range in half the time. Rock solid diesel never misses a tick at 98000 miles (but would not consider gas). Pulls better than my F350 crew long box diesel because it weighs more. Biggest problem is non support attitude of FMC. No satisfaction on missing rear sway bar, 2002 only. If Toyota or Nissan built a diesel SUV, bye-bye Ford.

Amazing fuel mileage for such a huge vehicle - Diesel 7.3L. The ultimate travel vehicle - plenty of space, rear air and rear entertainment - lots of cup holders, very smooth on the hiway. I do not have 4wd.

For simple ability to take a large family and pull a big trailer, the Excursion is hard to beat. The vehicle can comfortably seat 9 big people, offering as much space as a larger van and a lot more besides. I found the power to pull a nearly 10,000 loaded trailer along the Alaska Highway both ways a joy. It offers safety from other vehicles, and we have not had stability problems.

This vehicle is as tough as a tank, yet gentle and extremely comfortable. Will tow just about anything. Excellent ergonomics and a great family vehicle. 7.3L Diesel engine is the best and longest lasting production engine made, very durable and reliable.

So far reliable. 1 Firestone failure. Pulls a 9000 trailer very well getting 12-13 mpg. Gets 20 mpg+ without trailer with optional diesel. Will travel over 850 miles per 44 gal tank. Noisy outside but economy makes it worth it. Truck based, ride is harsh on bumps. 3.73 rear axle is right.

This truck has never let me down. 7 trips to FLA from NJ... and still runing great.

  • Doesnt hold value. - 2002 Ford Excursion

I really love my Excursion. My only complaint is, based on Edmunds, the value of my 2002 is about $5,000.00 less than I owe (after almost 2 years) AND I GOT 0% INTEREST. That is pretty darn bad. Even the dealership where I bought the Excursion was not going to give me pay-off....then they tried to sale me a 2004. Other than holding its value this truck is awesome. We take it everywhere. I have three growing boys (teens and pre-teens) and we can all fit in the truck very comfortably. It is the ultimate "large family" vehicle. Plus, Ford makes a great diesel engine.

I bought this car because i was driving a lot in dangerous traffic and wanted to be able to tow my camper. Since then i have taken all sorts of stuff in this car. With the diesel engine it has great pick-up and i get 18mpg average with 20 on the highway. turbo whine gives me that big truck feeling and lots of passing power. The 4wd drive feature is weak especially when you are still supposed to get out to lock the hub for serious off roading

Race car and trailer with tires and fuel weighs in at 10300lbs. and this is the only vehicle that can manage it without going to a F250/350 pickup truck(which I did have prior to the Excursion coming out. Going through Yellowstone Park with 2 baby seats filled and 5 adults plus all the luggage was excellent in this vehicle...we had all the room we needed. I have the PowerStroke Diesel and I assure you it gets 20.3 on the highway and no less than 17.8 on average which is as good as most vehicles on the road. Of course I use Cruise Control to its maximum. This is my second Excursion(the first being a 2000 model).
