This Year's Model Updates:

The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu undergoes a number of key changes. The six-speed automatic becomes more widely available with the four-cylinder engine, and the four is now standard instead of the V6 on the top-level LTZ trim. Bluetooth connectivity also debuts as an option, while stability control becomes standard across the lineup. Power-adjustable pedals are no longer offered.

Pros:
  • Strong performance from V6, excellent ride and handling balance, roomy cabin, comfortable seats, high crash test scores, solid fit and finish.
Cons:
  • Some subpar cabin materials, no rear center armrest, fussy manual-shift feature, a few key luxury features are unavailable.

  • Malibu for a day - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Yesterday I turned in a 2009 Malibu . I put 253 miles on this car in the Bay area. I handles the freeways well except the raised expansion joints on the 880. I had rented a 2009 camray the week before on the same route. In general the new malibu is a good car on its owns merits, in comparison to the camry, engine power similar, NVH similar..good!, Build quality similar. Interior a toos up. THe malibu has better seats hands down . The malibu has a very poorly designed Front door , entry and pillar arrangement. I am 6 foot tall and not fat. The B pillar has a plastic ledge seemingly designed to remove the rear pocket. I ruined a new pair pf slacks in this car. There is no need to this foolishness

  • Not as good as I thought - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

This car is not for people who drive in the country. The paint allows common driving on grid roads to take the paint off down to the steel, chips the windows and lights. The open hubcaps allow mud to get next to the wheel and causes a shimmy in the steering wheel. The trunk is alot smaller then my 2005 Malibu, the ride is good but the tires do not have traction.

  • Upgrade to the 6 speed - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

I bought the LS1 version but if I had to do it again (and had more money to spend!) I would buy the 6 speed. The 4 speed is adequate but I think the 6 speed might be peppier. Carefully check your fit and finish. Ive discovered that my passenger door isnt properly aligned and that my folding rear seats dont latch properly. All in all its a pretty smooth riding car and adequate for the usual day to day driving. I wouldnt want to take it on an extended journey though. Maybe the LTX model is more comfy?

  • Deceiving - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

This car is very deceiving. You might read great reviews on this car, but in reality I own this car and I would take back the purchase in a second. I understand where the "Great" reviews come from, but after owning this car after 4 months, it breaks down so quickly. My friend also owns this car and he told me his front console is vert lose and shakey and that his front seat ripped. The SAME exact thing happened to me and my mother. We are also are not happy with the leather/suede in this car. The suede wears down so quickly and stains very easily. The audio system loses its frequency often causing way too often static and loss of the channel. There is an up to this car, the trunk is big!

  • Decent - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Been having this vehicle for 7 months. Overall, its a decent drive. Few minor problems after purchased (1)leaking from the front passenger side whenever it rained b/c the hose from the sunroof was loosen, (2)problem with Onstar feature, the built-in computer chip somehow didnt synch up to provide diagnostic report. Importantly, there is a recall on AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT, for the Chevy Malibu and some other 2009 model vehicle. So if you own one of them, make sure you take them to your dealer for inspection. Would I recommend this car? I wouldnt! Its a decent car, has great exterior look. The interior look good too! But, seems like this is all it has.

  • Horrible Experience With This Car - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

Within the first 10 days of ownership, had to return this vehicle for following repairs: - incorrect fuel pump controller installed by factory. - defective computer - dead sunroof, power windows, The dealers only response is to throw parts at the car. They cant explain why the computer went dead, why the sunroof and windows are blowing fuzes, etc. With each new malfunction they assure me that the car is now fine. Right... The message from GM is that all these problems are unrelated and there is no single underlying root cause. Right... At this point it is plain that my brand- new 2009 Malibu LTZ is defective and unreliable. I will never buy another GM product

A squeak in the front end that couldnt be located.

  • I got a Lemon - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

My 2009 Malibu has been into the shop 3 times in the first 10 days of ownership. So far, they have "repaired" the following items. - fuel pump controller - engine computer - sun roof - driver-side power window - electronic compass I emphasize "repair" because although a number of parts have been replaced, the dealer has no idea why so many things are going bad all at once. Obviously in terms of a root cause, nothing has been repaired. So far, GM is unwilling to do anything outside the warranty process -- ie, keep taking it back for the dealer to throw parts at it -- unconscionable position. I am shredding my GM card. Never again...

  • Brake Woes and other defects - 2009 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

First week problems with the brakes, noisy, spongy. Dealership didnt take the wheels off to look. 3 trips later finally heard the noise, next trip replaced the drums. Wheel alignment out on all 4 wheels. After fixing still pulls to the left. Found out there was a recall on brakes and a transmission problem. Was told to bring it in to fix the trans problem and they would look at the alignment again. When the trans problem was fixed - asked about the alignment. Was told we were making things up and escorted out of the building. Contacted gm in Detroit who sound interested but dont hold out much hope they will do anything. Wont buy another gm product again.
