This Year's Model Updates:

This year, BMW will finally offer a DVD-based navigation system, though you must still give up the in-dash CD player if you opt for nav. Besides that, rear head protection airbags (optional last year) are now standard, as is an interesting new safety item called a brakeforce display -- during emergency braking situations, an extra set of rear brake lights will illuminate to warn motorists behind you. If you order the optional adjustable ride height suspension package, it no longer precludes the addition of the sport package. On the inside, new Dakota leather replaces the familiar Montana leather upholstery (it's optional on the 3.0i model and standard on the 4.4i). Individual model changes include a body-colored tailgate handle for any 3.0i equipped with the sport or premium package, and V-rated tires and an unlimited top speed for any sport package-equipped 4.4i.

Pros:
  • Rides and drives like a BMW sedan, wide range of engine choices, top safety scores, high-end cabin furnishings.
Cons:
  • Limited off-road abilities, less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, lousy fuel economy in the city.

Flat out, the best all around sport-performance-luxury vehicle Ive ever driven. Despite minor problems with the door mirror retractor motor and the dash computer display (both replaced under warranty), I am totally in love with this vehicle. The honeymoon still goes on even after eight months of ownership.

  • not a reliable vehicle - 2003 BMW X5

A very disappointing vehicle. Our X5 is in the shop an average of every six weeks for various problems. It has been recalled several times. The interior door handle finish is peeling off on all four handles (supposedly, this is "normal" wear and tear - sure, if this were a ten year old car!). The steering wheel makes a horrible grinding noise in cold weather (three visits, not fixed - a piece fell out recently). The latest problem - the seal on the sunroof is starting to fail. This vehicle is not up to usual BMW standards. We are getting rid of it this week.

  • Exactly what you would expect from BMW - 2003 BMW X5

As stylish as SUVs come, superlative handling, ferocious V8 acceleration, opulent yet understated interior. BMW clearly sweated the details on the X5 - look at the quality of the dash plastics, of the shift knob, of the steering wheel, etc. Mine can even be programmed to ventilate itself twice daily - no more leaving the office to enter a steaming car! Of course, you can always drop your foot on the gas and enjoy the 300+ ft-lbs of torque.

  • x5 problems - 2003 BMW X5

I had problems, after the first year, all the time and it was always in the shop. Thank goodness for everything free. At different dealerships, couldnt keep it running. it was a lemon, and no one would do anything about it! I got so mad on way to yet another appt,(over an hour, because of traffic, one way) I sold it (had bought it and not leased, didnt want to be stuck with it after expiring warrenty soon) and got a Z4, which I love and seems more reliable.

After driving this car for 3 years, I was very happy with the dependability of the car. No electrical problems and except for service, never needed repairs. Only disappointment is lack of changes in style and interior from year to year.

  • Best Ive ever bought/owned - 2003 BMW X5

Ive had my X5 for 3 weeks and 1,600 miles. It is my 5th BMW. Even measured against previous cars Ive owned like an M3 and a 540i, this is simply the best vehicle Ive ever purchased. It has EVERYTHING - performance, luxury, roominess, all weather capability (stable and tenaciously grippy on wet roads - you have to drive it in the rain to believe it), goes anywhere anytime in any conditions. Ive heard all the reliability complaints and maybe Ill have some problems down the road but so far, its absolutely problem free - not a rattle or squeak. The build quality is so far beyond anything else out there its just ridiculous.
