This year, BMW will finally offer a DVD-based navigation system, though you must still give up the in-dash CD player if you opt for nav. Besides that, rear head protection airbags (optional last year) are now standard, as is an interesting new safety item called a brakeforce display -- during emergency braking situations, an extra set of rear brake lights will illuminate to warn motorists behind you. If you order the optional adjustable ride height suspension package, it no longer precludes the addition of the sport package. On the inside, new Dakota leather replaces the familiar Montana leather upholstery (it's optional on the 3.0i model and standard on the 4.4i). Individual model changes include a body-colored tailgate handle for any 3.0i equipped with the sport or premium package, and V-rated tires and an unlimited top speed for any sport package-equipped 4.4i.

- Limited off-road abilities, less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, lousy fuel economy in the city.

By autooracle - April 18 - 1:03 pmGreat car. Just normal wear and tear maintenenace issues. Handling is great. Yes its an SUV, not a Porsche. Fuel economy is fine for what it is. Performance out of the 3.0 is all you would need unless you are towing.

By Screech503 - January 2 - 10:00 amAfter driving a 4.4i X5, I decided to trade up to the 4.6is. I was always "wowed" by the 4.4i, but the 4.6is with the 340 hp engine blew my socks off. I think its the best car Ive every owned (this my 4th BMW, so thats saying alot!) The interior design is very nice, and comfotable yet gripping "sport" seats. The thing handles like a M5. And the wheels, oh the wheels, 20inch 5 stars. They make the car.

By Jim Fischer - November 12 - 5:12 amRide quality with a 3.0 W/Sport. Bouncing of the ride is extremely annoying for the passengers and driver at factory settings. The tire air settings on the drivers side door do not represent the dynamics air pressure has on this vehichle at all. I have 255/55r/18" tires Michelin mxv M&S. Mileage was 13 mph to 18 at very best. I looked on the sidewall of the tire and a pressure of 51 lbs. I put in 47 lbs of pressure on all 4 tires. Ride is incredibly smooth, over bumps smooth freeway. The extra pressure gives the SAV 20.8 mpg aggressive driving all day long. 26 MPG @ 60 MPH with cruise. Much faster, better cornering. The solution to bounce. Start at 51 go dn 37p

By gmatt - July 16 - 10:00 amTraded in my 97 540i because I needed more space and awd. The interior is very similar, but actually feels roomier than the 540 and for the first time in my life (in any car), my seat is not at the aft limit (Im 62"). Tried the Discovery (rented for 7 days) and wasnt impressed. Test drove an XC90 - this would be my second choice as the price was almost the same.
