Overview & Reviews
The 5 Series has been completely redesigned for 2004. Along with a new V8 and the iDrive vehicle management system, buyers can expect even greater handling from this premier midsize sedan than before.
- Available V8 power, handles more like a sports car than a sedan, luxurious yet sporty cabin.

should have ordered the sport package - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By larrycurlymo - October 10 - 2:00 amthe sport package test drive was the hook in my purchase. who would have thought there would be such a differnece in performance? had to bring the car back to the dealer 4 times because of the iDrive glitches. should have waited a couple of months to work out the kinks.

Problems Problems Problems - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By ReneeBelkin - October 2 - 2:00 amIve been in the dealer more than the car. Told flaws are fixed in the next years model! Pain in the rear to get the car in. The problems are repeated cup holders broken, in dash software problems, doors rattle, lights stay on, signals flip to one side then ther other, wheel balance is always pulling, seat adjustment controls and overall one thing or another,.

Sweet Engine - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By brusstar - September 26 - 10:00 amThe sweet V-8 mated to the six-speed manual make this car great fun to drive, like a sports coupe but with a decent back seat. Many question the 2004 (E60) exterior styling in pictures, but in real life people agree it looks beautiful, and does not look like every other great sports sedan of the last ten years. It just takes a little time to master the i- Drive, and it really cleans up the dashboard (other reviewers seem to forget this design benefit).

Fix and Repair Frequently - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By UNHAPPY/04/530i - August 22 - 2:00 amI have an 04/530i with sport suspension.... what is that old adage...never buy a first year model..the car has been towed to the dealer 3 times., radio has been replaced, the LCD screen has gone dead numerous times and the dealer has had to replace it, no numerous occations the "i-drive" LCD screen will not operate until 5-10 mins., after the car has been started., the chasey creeks, rattles...ps this has all hapeened over the last 10 months.....road noise from front tires(had them checked by dealer....no unusally wear) sounds like Im driving a truck wit old retread. By the way my wife has a 03/525 that is a dream .

Transmission Jolts/Jerks/Clunks Fuel Ec - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By Greatly Disappointed - August 22 - 2:00 amFrom speed of, e.g., 30 mph, as gas pedal released to bring vehicle to stop/lower speed (when coasting and/or braking), as vehicle slows driver feels jerk/jolt forward a number times as vehicle shifts/lurches down from gear to gear (seems to be caused by abrupt increase, and then decrease in speed and sometimes associated with a clunking sound) as it comes to a stop. At a stop, when placed in reverse, and after releasing the brake pedal, without depressing the gas pedal, the vehicle suddenly moves in a backward motion and reaches a speed in excess of 5 mph. BMW&service states: "normal" conditions.

The 5 drives fine - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By BimmerUser - September 30 - 2:00 amJust finished my first 1k in it.Sports package variable ratio steering is great, feels like a smallercar. Can be tricked into over compensating though. Nice grip from the MXMs but the brake feel is a tad bit mushy.6 spd auto is nice with the torquey inline6.There isnt the 2nd push youd expect past 4k+. Low end is nice.Ergonomics are a bit off:Driver cupholder is too far away to use safely while driving. iDrive is nice but unuseable when driving. Sound Sys controls menus are stupid and non-intuitive, requiring too many steps to change CDs. Unable to change CD in changer from steering wheel.CD changer in the back of the glove compartment a dumb idea.

A great Automobile - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By W.D.T. - September 30 - 2:00 amThis is a pretty fast car but could be much better. I do give the handling at high speed a thumbs up. But again could recieve some help. Nothing put out yet since the introduction of the M3 has given the BMW its reputation of a really fast, economic, handling, comfortable, all around great car and following the time of technology and improvement! Which is what I would love to say. I have considered a Benz to tell you the truth.

So So - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By Joe from the North - January 11 - 2:00 amThis is my second 5 Series BMW. Compared to the previous version, the 2004 is roomier and more comfortable. The trunk is larger and the new electronics are enjoyable. However the feel and drive are not as tight and driveable as previous versions. The interior dash doesnt have the look or styling of a luxury car. The i-drive, although not as complicated as the 7 series still is difficult to use.

FACTORY DEFECTS - 2004 BMW 5-Series
By MURRAY - July 18 - 2:00 amPOOR QUALITY OF IGNITION COILS THAT WERE INSTALLED DURING PRODUCTION AND VERY POOR SERVICE ANALYSIS ( SO FAR TOOK 3 TIMES TO CORRECT) BY PRESTIGE MOTORS IN RAMSEY NJ MADE THE OWNERSHIP OF THIS 525I LESS THAN SATISFACTORY. IN SHORT THE SERVICING DEALER COULD NOT CARE LESS ABOUT THE CUSTOMER. THIS WELL KNOWN IGNITION PROBLEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHECKED AND CORRECTED PRIOR TO DELIVERY.
